Life is about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward

Ok, so I'm not the biggest "Rocky" fan. I really don't like boxing. However, I think that Sylvester Stallone is a really good writer, and this speech that is in Rocky Balboa (2006) hits the nail on the head when it comes to parenting. I feel like all my older kids should watch this video. I'm tired of hearing them blame me for things that aren't my fault. If they want something in life, they need to fight for it. I can only do so much. I raise them, and I think I'm doing right by them, but when they grow up to say horrible nasty things to me because they don't think I'm doing enough, that isn't ok. I have 6 kids. I can't support adult children, nor should I have to. I know this is cliche, but when I was my son's age, I was pregnant and had 2 jobs, because I was fighting to survive. He has never known that. He has never been dumped in the middle of the snow, in a place 3000 miles from home, and told to "get a job" or you won't have a place to live. That is what his father told me. As you can expect, things didn't work out very well. Life is hard. I complain a lot because things have hit my hard. My mental and physical health, along with some really crappy luck, but that doesn't mean I stop fighting. I have never stopped fighting, and neither should they. I hope life is easier for them than it has been for me, but even if it isn't, they need to fight. So today, even though life has hit me down pretty far, I'm going to take the hits and keep going...because Sly says so.

Aw I love this. You are a great lady Colene and your kids are so blessed to have you. I know what you mean, some kids today, do not know the hardship we have suffered. I praise you for never stopping fighting and how you survived. I get it. And i am listening to Rocky right now..love this scene.

It really is a great scene! I try to do right by my children, but sometimes I think I forget to teach them the hard stuff. I'm definitely trying. Thank you for saying that. I live for those kids, even when they don't appreciate it.

@cpefley Yes I know Colene, same here, I only have one grown son, and dare I say it, thankfully, he knows some hardship..he said to me not too long ago..Mom, I am sorry for your hardships in life, I know I have had them but nothing like yours, so at 35 I now know he gets it. There will come a day when yours will too it will come to the day they will thank you.

It is a natural instinct of parents not wishing upon their children the hardship they themselves had to go through growing up. But experiencing failure and making mistakes make them tougher mentally and emotionally. It also opens more doors to opportunities.

@cpefley Oh, I loved that speech he gave to his son. Every parent should say something similar to their child----well, when they're old enough
