Working on My Genealogy

It has been a long time since I worked on my French Canadian genealogy. I did it many years ago and never really put it on Ancestry. I am now in the process of doing that. The wonderful thing is that now I can connect to the primary documents that back up the dates etc since Ancestry has the parish records online. I have found a few ancestors that I had made errors on. Now I can look at the original records and not take someone else's word for them. Any time you are using transcriptions there is a chance for an error and I now have new ancestors who I never knew I had and I am making sure that I not only check every fact but double check it at a couple sources where ever possible. One of my new ancestors is a Carignan Soldier and his Filles du Roi wife. I am excited to have both of them in my ancestry. Genealogy is an exacting science and any little mistake means you are connecting to the wrong family. I suppose that since it is almost 400 years ago it is irrelevant but it matters to me.

That must be very interesting to know something about ancestors that lived 400 years ago.

It is fun to read about their lives, more info on some of these early ones than ones 100 years ago lol

It is exciting to know more about our ancestors. I know everything up to 300 years ago, but it's hard to go back more.

I can get back to the 1300's on one line but yes, it is hard to get back 200 years on some of my lines.

@BelleStarr This is the problem, with some lines it's pretty easy, while for others it's hard to find info.

Even i would like to know about my ancestors. My grandad started the research but found it difficult to obtain some information. That's very interesting. To connect with the past and your ancestors

Every day more information becomes available for genealogists. It is much easier today than when I started 30 years ago.

I once benefitted a lot when someone got info from my family tree but then realised it was not hers. Genealogy research is a lot of fun. I am pretty much at the end of mine.

My husband connected his mom to a few generals, but maybe he didn't double check since some years back that may not have been possible. His dad's family go back to one of the boats around the time of the Mayflower.

I have two ancestors who came in the time after the pilgrims but still very early in New England. It is always good to double check everything.

@BelleStarr What type of things do you use to double-check the name and dates?

@BelleStarr Around the time of the French Revolution they were escaping before their heads could be chopped off as they were related to the royal family in some way

Happy Birthday to Isabelle
I agree completely that relying on guaranteed information is very important. You only need one wrong entry and will end up researching the wrong path. PS Happy Birthday

How interesting. I wish I had asked more questions while my family was a live. They are all gone now and I have no way of finding a lot of behind the scenes things out.

@BelleStarr ......Yes, there is. I did find a family site and put all my info there and was given some back so that was helpful.

I never let it be a pain, I just move on to another line or someone else's genealogy until I can figure out what I want to do with the one that is frustrating me.

I love looking back in the family tree, I am not good at adding anything but I did manage to meet someone on line who helped me get my generation and the next on one family tree.

I should trace my ancestry. It's on my to-do list but I honestly don't know if I'll get around to it.

Watch a few who do you think you are episodes. They have done a lot of Jewish genealogy and especially the ones in England do a better job of going back to Russian etc and what is available to genealogists. I will look at some I think are particularly helpful

As you say, genealogy is an exacting science. It's good you're going to the trouble of making sure it is correct.
