I like shopping for bargains and getting good deals... but, there are times,  when I prefer to use the local businesses, even if they are slightly more expensive.   Here in Spain, times are still hard, as a result of the economic crisis from a couple of years back, spain is still struggling to get back to where it was ... many businesses are  having to close every month, because of the knock on effect of that crisis, there is still high un employment, and low wages, families and businesses are still struggling. One of the local businesses I continue to support,  is our vet... many of you who have dogs or cats,  know, that it's the time of year, when you need to protect your animals from fleas and ticks and all manor of things... well,  we could have got our flea collar on line... and cheaper..., but,  we want our vet to be there, in our community,  when we need him .... not with his shop locked up, with the shutters down,  and a for sale notice  stuck to it.. I'm sure most of you do a bit off both too, I think it's  good to put money into the community that you live in... it helps the people and families, and has a ripple effect. photo is mine...

We try to support local businesses, especially with smaller things but sometimes the saving is so great that we succumb to buying online. Great photo Susan!

@sueznewz2 When we were fitting out the bus we needed little laser lights. They come in a big roll. We started off with a price of $240 at a caravan and camping show, found them at a private garage for $85 and ended up with them landed in Australia from China for $25. I don't think you can be blamed for buying offshore with a saving like that.

We've always tried to shop locally. In fact, tomorrow I will drive back to our old area just to get my hair done. My hair dresser is a survivor of hard economic times in that area, and has her own shop, so I'll support her.

I think it is important to utilize those businesses which help your community. But you also have to save your pocket too. Some happy medium has to be found.

I agree, even here in Switzerland we feel the crisis. Many individual shops have been closed and this is a shame. We like to buy real bread from a bakery shop, not at the supermarket.

@sueznewz2 There are many examples, a small cafè, a small taverna or restaurant that is not part of an international chain. I love small shops where the owners care for their clients.

Yes it does. I always used a local vet when I had my dogs. I don't think I'll ever stop missing them.

Susan, that is a sound strategy for shopping. I like to buy a lot of things on Amazon because of the convenience, but I try to support local businesses as well.

When I can, I support local businesses of all types, sometimes I am lazy and just order things online. I do use a local vet.

I totally agree with patronizing small business in local towns and communities. I try my best to support my local stores and businesses and you make a good point with the vet. We have one in our small town and it would be a shame if they closed and we had to travel further away for our pets care.
