The trip was planned back in January, now it's finally arrived. Only four more sleeps until my friend and I head across the Tasman Sea to Melbourne, Australia. Many of you know Melbourne is my favourite city outside New Zealand. I usually go about every two years. This time a friend is coming with me. She hasn't been there for over forty years and I'm going to show her around. We're looking forward to a few days escape, enjoying the shopping, food and culture Melbourne has to offer. There's no set agenda, but lots of possibilities. I'm just looking forward to being in the city again, being surrounded by everything that is Melbourne. We leave Thursday morning, arrive home again Monday night. The flight across the Tasman takes about three and a half hours. And then we'll be there, two middle-aged women on the town! I know we're going to enjoy ourselves. Photo courtesy of Pixabay.

We'll only be restricted by money, or lack of it, and perhaps that we're not as young as we used to be

We arrived there from New Zealand catching a plane at the ghastly hour of 4 I think. Landed there in the morning but we were not taken to the hotel as the check in was only around 4. Tired as we were, we were taken sightseeing and even had lunch in an Indian restaurant. After checking in we had to be ready for the Penguin March at Philips Island. Got back at 10 in the night. The next day was a trip to the road that took us to the 12 apostles. We dropped that trip as it was was too tiring but instead spent time in the hotel enjoying a relaxed bath, a movie and a tram ride round the city. Met the crowd in the evening at around 7 ate dinner and got back to the hotel. What are your plans?

Most of it will be inner city as my friend hasn't been there for so long. Definitely the city circle tram, Vincent Van Gogh exhibition at the Victoria Arts Centre, the Victoria State library and the Ned Kelly exhibition, Maybe one of the jazz festival events on while we're there, shopping at Docklands, dinner either on the Colonial Tram restaurant or the river cruise. Exploring the alleyways Melbourne is so famous for. Victoria Market. Visit to Hopetoun Tea rooms. Maybe lunch or dinner at Master Chef mentor Shannon Bennett's restaurant. That's just for starters!

@valmnz Middle-aged people, I now believe, know what they like so are more likely to enjoy themselves and can teach the young whippersnappers a thing or two. So I tell myself. Enjoy Melbourne.

I love Melbourne. I go about every two years. It's no more expensive than going somewhere here in New Zealand.

What a treat you have in store Val. I didn't realise that it would take you so long to get there - I can get to Spain from here in just over 2 hours.

@jaboUK New Zealand is a long way from everywhere!! Australia is our closest neighbour, well apart from a couple of Pacific Islands.

I love the big city, there are only 78,000 people where I live, which suits me, but it's nice to escape to something more vibrant at times.

@valmnz Sounds like fun. When we want the big city lights we head to New York City. It helps that we have family there.
