Reminiscing...That Barrier And Top Gun!

My fighter jet shaped cloud!

I woke up today remembering a few years, moments and people that brought a smile to my face. It was such a different time. I was 12 years old heading for 13 and we were close to an air force base. I used to wake up nearly every Saturday morning to the loud booming sound of the sound barrier being broken. Oh lordy,  that used to make me laugh! The student pilots knew they weren't allowed to do that but they were young and cheeky guys! So, I swear our windows inhaled and exhaled when that happened! I just lay there grinning. I wanted to become an air force pilot but I had asthma, so it was a no go, plus it was 1989 and I was a, shock horror, girl!  But by the time I was 18 things could have been different, except for the darn asthma. I watched the movie Top Gun 21 times! Yes, partly because of the then gorgeous Tom Cruise but also to see those fighter jets cutting through the sky! My sister went to college with these air force guys and they used to come and drink coffee by us when they were allowed off base and we'd go to the movies. Oh, but it was fun times! I sometimes wish we could go back in time to re-visit good times. But luckily we have our memories we can take out and polish. Did you ever want to do something out of the norm for a living? Have you heard the sound barrier being broken? Ever watch a movie 21 times? I took a photo of this cloud. It looks just like a fighter jet to me. Or I am slightly nutty! Have a great week, all!

There are movies I have watched 21 times - or more - and yes, it is good to have those memories to fall back on.

@bluesa Orlando Bloom was the main attraction in "Lord of the Rings" . I also watched "Kingdom of Heaven" - also starring Orlando Bloom - dozens of times. The movie about the life of the temptations, how they got into Motown etc.The movie about the life of Elvis Presley called "This is Elvis" - I never watch the end of it. There are many others which would take up too much time .

It is a lovely photo you took! I too wanted to join the air force but I was past the age of acceptance then. I was sad this happened. I too wanted to fly the planes. However, they thanked me for applying and said they were sorry lol

I have no idea what it means to have the sound barrier broken. How come you could be a pilot due to asthma? I am having bad allergies to pollen and along with the asthma it is really doing a number on me. I walked around town hiding rocks for kids today. When I get home 45 minutes later I was wheezing. I'm exhausted just from exerting that much effort outside today.

@bluesa oh okay so the boom is actually from them flying I thought it was something maybe they did on the loud speaker goofing around or something. It is a scary sound like startling or just neat to hear? I have asthma too so I guess that job would have not been an option for me either if I had wanted that.

@shaggin yeah it is from them flying way too fast. And it's a loud booming sound, startling to hear, but I found it neat too. Yes, seeing you also have asthma flying a fighter jet is a bit chancy.

I hope you feel better soon @shaggin . I couldn't fly jets because of asthma because of the altitude and gravitational force of flying jets at those speeds and heights. The sound barrier being broken is because of the speeds those jets get to. Then it creates a sonic boom. Take it easy and pace yourself till you feel a bit better.

@jillybean1222 , I wonder, it would be awesome to see them together on the big screen again. She was beautiful. Yeah, there will probably be some young guy to pull the younger generation. :)

Your cloud does look like a fighter jet! I can understand how having asthma would prevent you becoming a pilot. I know two pilots and my uncle, who flew fighter jets. I was in awe of him way back then. No, I never watch a movie more than once, possibly twice. I wanted to be a heart surgeon, but my mother talked me out of it, and later, my husband.

Thank you Dianne :) ! I would have been in awe too. Yes, the asthma was a deal breaker. I think you would have been a very successful heart surgeon @DianneN . I just don't have the stomach to operate on any one.
