A knitting dilemma...

Most people who knit and/or crochet stick with the basics - baby blankets, socks, throw blankets, maybe placemats or table cloths. And maybe a pillow or two.
For years now, I've been wanting to make curtains. I tried one on a small window at my last place. After I put it up in place, it began to stretch way too much. It was a mess! We laughed and laughed and I ended up leaving it up for the new owners to scratch their heads over.
Now I'm realizing I might need something more along the lines of macrame. But my windows are quite huge and I can't do any project like that standing up! Not quite sure how to attempt something like that.
Any ideas? I'd love to do something really pretty in the living room and a bit darker in the bedroom, but maybe with some sparkle!

Have you ever seen tatting? It is sort of a lace like crocheting. I think it would be nice for curtains.
