Spoiler alerts – 1957 Aldiss got really epic with the nine Millennia stories, which explore the fate of humanity at episodes stretched over a phenomenal forty million years. The opening story finds Earth involved in a nuclear conflict with an alien race. On yet another World, an Earth traveller is marooned as transport home is curtailed due to the war. The planet he is on happens to be a utopian pleasure World able to conjure up any dreams and visions its visitors and inhabitants desire. He should be happy, but when he meets another trapped visitor, this time from the enemy World, his prejudicial patriotism threatens to drag the pleasure realm into the conflict too. An intriguing look at how war affects even neutral states, which cannot be totally aloof from the conflicts forever. Arthur Chappell
