Dry Drowning

I was reading some news from different online newspapers and came across this very, very sad one, unfortunately. The caption caught my attention as it said "dry drowning" and I thought "How can someone die from dry drowning?" I am including the link for the article about this cute toddler that did drown that way. Now I know what it is and was wondering if you had ever heard of such a thing? My heart goes to the grieving family.
A week after swimming on a family vacation, a 4-year-old boy from Texas took his last breath. The suspected cause of death is "dry drowning," a rare condition in which there is a delayed physical reaction to inhaling water.

I am an aquatic professional who oversee all the swimming pools and aquatic facilities for the city I work for. Unfortunately, dry drowning is not only something I've heard of, it's something I have had to deal with. We try to be as proactive as we can to educate our patrons about dry drownings.

@marlina Any drowning situation is scary to deal with. We have over 155,000 people visit our aquatic facilities on an annual basis. That's 155,000 people I have to keep from dying. It's a heavy burden that I don't take lightly. We had two drowning incidents last summer (both 6 year olds), but my lifeguards were able to bring both of them back to life, and both of them had no lasting effects and are doing well.

This is very sad, first time I heard of dry drowning. I wonder if there is something that could be done after a person takes in water to a prevent it.

This is so sad. I could feel the sadness of the child's father losing his goodlooking son. My 5-year-old grandson is watching TV beside me . . I got up and kissed him.

I think I've heard of this before but didn't remember what it was about. The article said that symptoms usually develop within one to 24 hours whereas this time it took about a week. Maybe he got water in his lungs at a later date like when taking a bath or something and no one realized it?
