Siestas should be mandatory

Siestas ought to be mandatory, at least in the summer time. We had lunch a little past noon, then had a really good nap. In the US that is not really the custom. We are all workaholics. Some people do not even take a proper lunch. Where you live, are siestas the norm? Do you like napping in the day time?

Maybe optional, but everyone gets comfy and rests a while.

@Jessicalynnt We have reached the point now where hubby is wondering if his naps affect the quality of his night time sleep.

@GardenGerty I didn't, I often want too but rarely do, I have trouble sleeping, and it seems like if I do, it makes that worse

It is very popular here to take a quick nap in the afternoons. Many usually take a few minutes just to take a nap whether you're under a tree in the middle of nowhere or if you're outside the house in a comfy chair. You'll most likely see the elders nap more often than the younger ones but generally naps are something we like doing.

@sublime03 During the school year I work and cannot. I have been in a situation this month that did not promote healthy naps. This week things will be back to normal for a while.

@GardenGerty Well if you're in the elderly category you most definitely deserve to take as many naps for good health. Even if it's short naps, it makes a difference to take little naps.

Siestas are only given to the littles it seems. At my granddaughter's day care, they have quiet or nap time from 1-3. Wouldn't that be lovely if we all could take a little snooze in the afternoon? I'll bet I wouldn't fall asleep so early in the evening if we did.

Even if it is only a quiet rest time it is good for those growing bodies. I think it would be good for me as well to take even a twenty minute rest.

@GardenGerty I love my catnaps. They are unexpected and I feel a bit better after I wake.

I have read where people who take siestas live longer.

I think that may be true.I really should when I can. My brother does not nap every day but for thirty years he says he has taken a Sunday afternoon nap.

Nobody takes a siesta here, not even in Summer. The pause for lunch is from 45 to 60 minutes.

We get thirty minutes for lunch. If I had 45 minutes or an hour and a comfortable place I could nap for as much as a half hour and that would be enough.

@GardenGerty Most people have no time to go home in 45 minutes. They have their lunch outside (and this can take easily 30 minutes) and the 15 minutes left are to to back and forth from their office.

No I hate naps, but sometime I have to take them to make it through a day, especially if I have been up off and on with the sick.

@andriaperry You have had your share of experiences there. Yes, I was uncomfortable, too cold, and if I left, then someone important came in.I could not hog the recliner, as they wanted hubby in it as much as possible.

I think I am still tired out from hubby being ill. Usually I do not settle down and sleep, or it is only for about twenty minutes.

During my childhood, siestas were still popular. But I don't like it because all I wanted to do that time was to use it to watch TV or read a book. I believe that having siestas will make a person more productive. But it shouldn't be more than an hour I guess.

@GardenGerty Yes, I agree with you. I love watching cartoons and reading fairy tales when I was a kid.

A 30 minute siesta is a routine with me and a routine for Preiti as well not to count the other times she sleeps - for hours sometimes (lol)

Thirty minutes sounds just right to me. It provides rest but leaves time for other things too.

I have an AARP card, so I have a right to take a nap! Seriously, I've taken naps since I don't know when. When I drove to St. Louis yesterday the first thing I did once I checked in was take a nap; and, when I got home this afternoon, it was "hit the hay" for a nap!

Most of the time I cannot sleep, but in a cool room in the summer, it is more likely to happen. i think I am just tired from hubby going to the hospital.

My kids had to rest, if not nap in the summer. I ran daycare for years and we all took it easy for a little while every day.

Once the work week starts we will not get to do this. I had suggested it before vacation. Hubby could come home from work and rest. Now he is just resting up, and so am I.

In the Philippines we adapted this habit from Spain, our former colonial ruler. It's common in the agricultural areas in the province but the lifestyle in urban living makes this practice unrealistic. I nap occasionally when my body is telling me I need rest but it's not a daily routine.

If I were at home all the time I would be like you an occasional napper. I think it would be practical because I get up early.
