A Surprise in the Book Bag

As most of you know, my local library delivers books to people in our city who are homebound by reason of illness or age, temporary or permanent. I never knew about this service until I became homebound and called the library to ask if they were able to deliver books. Their answer happily surprised me and it's been a few years since they've been delivering to me now. The woman who heads up this program gets to know her patrons very well. She spends a lot of time talking with us, sometimes visiting us, and learns what our reading tastes are. We are able to choose our own books, and she enjoys supplementing with books by authors who are probably new to us, who she hopes we will also enjoy. She's opened up the world to us. I finished reading a book last night and went into the book bags to see what books called out to me right away. I brought those books out so I would easily have a new book to grab. And then I saw a tiny book in one of the bags and brought it out. It's called "Gwendy's Button Box". Strange name. Weird book cover. And then I saw the names of the authors. Richard Chizmar and Stephen King. Whoa. I didn't know about this book! I'm not sure how it got by me, but obviously my librarian is watching for new Stephen King books! She's the best! I should be able to read the whole book in a day - maybe a few hours. And I'm pretty excited about it. So I'm finishing up a few things that need to be done today and then I'm going to settle in with this book. Hope you're all enjoying the day! Claudia

Well I hope you enjoy your new book. I love getting new books but right now I have too many as it is so reading what i have before i can get new ones. Do you get new books monthly ? I think it's nice they do that for people.

They deliver books every 3 weeks and it's rare that I get through all of them in that amount of time. The librarian lets me know which ones to read first, since they can't be renewed (new books), so that's what I do. And with the rest, I can usually renew anything I really want to read!

It was truly one of the best stories I've read recently and it only took a few hours to finish. He's done it again!

Great service in your area! Just checked on Amazon and the price is pretty high for such a short book. Never read a book from SK yet.

That little book was one of the best stories I've ever read! He does very well with horror, but he does even better when he chooses to do something that's not horror. I finished it in a few hours!

No, I didn't either, but wow! It's wonderful! And the illustrations inside are also great. I could not put it down and it only took a few hours to read the whole thing.

A book mobile would be a wonderful thing in our little neighborhood! There are so many elderly people, and I know they would all enjoy being able to get books, especially in the heat of the summer!
