My cat does not recognize me after 4 years of separation

It has been 4 long years since I had to be separated from my dear cat, the avatar photo of mine. My son is allergic to cat's fur but he loves to disturb my cat very much. Although we tried many ways to separate my boy from my cat, my son's sinus allergy had worsen that the doctor in charged advice us to quarantine the cat from our son. My cat had since been staying with my mother-in-law for 4 years. When I visited her during the school holidays, my cat still could not recognize me at all. When she sees me coming near her, she would quickly hide under the cupboard or vehicle. It is obviously that either she had Dementia ( since she is more than 12 years old in human years) or she hated me. I felt so sad that my favorite cat is afraid of me now. Do you feel sad when your pet could not recognize you?

Why should the cat hate you? You've become a stranger to it. I'm sure you can befriend it again.

I think she is just being cautious.. I see my cats daily and sometimes I come home and my cat will see me but still run on the porch to get away.. I usually will just sit and talk to it and it will come out again.. I do feel bad.. but I feel it is better for the cat to be safe and hide I know this way that a stranger is not going to be able to walk up to my cat outside and easily abduct it. it will run away first!

Thanks for sharing your experience with me. I am surprised that even though you see your cat daily, it will react that way too. I will try your method. Thanks very much

Yes, I will try to visit her again as often as I could since my mother in law stays far away from my place.

This would be Sad. It was hard enough yrs ago when we got our rescue Dog Reggie, and at first until he got used to me, he wanted nothing to do with me. Even later on before he passed he was still more my husbands dog. We figured out he had been abused by a Blonde female and until he got used to me, and knew I would give him water, and be nice to him did he want to come around. So I can relate, and hope yours can get used to you again

i think it is the dogs that do not forget. When our maid who was working for us some years ago visited us Preiti started wagging her tail.

The cat surely does not hate you, simply she cannot recognize you. It's pretty common for cats.

I know it can be so disheartening. I am sure it must be dementia as you mentioned, for animals can't hate, they only love :)

Yes, I do suspect that it could be dementia since she is a very old cat, 12 years old , she should be 64 years old in human years now.

So did I. I felt very embarrassed and sad that my dog couldn't recognize me as I was just left for only half one year.
