Favorite Summer Songs #8 - "Summertime"

The temperature has been in the 80's all day, so now is as good a time as any to continue my @TRBRocks420 inspired Favorite Summer Songs (songs with "summer," or a variation, in the title,) series. We are at #8: "Summertime" by The Sundays. You might remember London-based alternative band The Sundays from their 1990 single, "Here's Where the Story Ends," which, thanks to weekly play on MTV's Sunday Night alternative rock show, 120 Minutes, reached #1 on Billboard Magazine's Modern Rock Tracks chart (it's only chart appearance. The song didn't even chart in the UK.) Or, perhaps you remember their pretty cover of The Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," from the US release of their 1992 album, Blind, which was also placed on the soundtrack for the television series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The Sundays placed three songs into the Modern Rock Tracks chart Top 10, with a fourth ("Goodbye") at #11. One of those Top 10 appearances was "Summertime" (#10,) a feel good jangle pop tune that turned out to be the band's biggest British hit (#15.) It's also the only Sundays single to chart in both Australia and Canada as well. All in all, "Summertime" was The Sundays' most successful single. Summer songs are supposed to make a listener feel good, and, thanks to the sweet vocals of Harriet Wheeler, the bouncy "Summertime" takes care of that in spades. Enjoy! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

I loved that show 120 minutes. MTV brought a lot of cool stuff and so sad they threw it all down the toilet for money. I wonder if they really made more money with how they went corporate. Really like that song though. Thanks for reminding me of it once again.

MTV was the bomb for what, 15-20 years? Now look at it. Everyone makes fun of them.

I love The Sundays. I just wish they had put out more than three albums.

the video is not available in the UK, though I know the song - there is of course the Summertime song that is rather more melancholy as in this perfect Ella Fitzgerald version

I'm glad you like it. You probably would like "Here's Where the Story Ends," too, then. They were a good band.
