Modern vs traditional

June 18, 2017 1:23pm CST
Today I met a person who says modern living style has made people lonely, some how selfish and don't care about a culture and tradition. But I think we should welcome modern lifestyle by following our culture and tradition.

I'm not sure whether it's down to modern living or not. These days there seems to be less of a community in our local area even compared to 10 years ago!

I think we need to find the balance. We can make both kind of activities. I don't think the modern culture made someone lonely, I think the loneliness is something that's on our minds, or maybe it depends with the situation, but not with the culture.

What happens is that while we try to adopt modern practices, we somehow get lost in the race to follow the herd and forget that not all traditional things are bad or illogical even in present context. And it is we who suffer consequently.

Depends on what country you live in. Traditional? I remember growing up in a neighborhood where people knew each other by name. I now live in a neighborhood where I don't know the names of my neighbors. We live peacefully and don't bother each other. Modern? In America, we had a problem with housing segregation. Even though the law prohibits discrimination and people can supposedly live where they choose if they can afford it, that doesn't mean the neighbors will live “happily ever after”. Prohibiting housing discrimination was a change this country needed. The neighborhood I grew up in was segregated. The neighborhood I live in now is integrated. It reflects America's diversity. I miss the traditional, but I welcome the modern and would never go back to the traditional.

I would agree with that person. Today you don't find families living together and supporting each other. Children are encouraged to move out. Depending on country, encouraged to emigrate. Family becomes secondary, and without learning from elders, traditions and culture are lost. We have become too focused on material worth and striving to be better, resulting in no time for family values. Sometimes I wish for a simple life, surrounded by the whole family, because that is all that is really important.

We need to strike a balance- adopt modern things and embrace them but follow good things from our traditions as well.
