Gift Cards as Presents

This is a hot topic debate among shoppers when a special occasion arrives. Is it okay to give gift cards as presents? I do give gift cards, mainly to my dad and my brothers. I don't mind shopping, however they can be difficult to shop for and I figured gift cards would be of more use to them. I like to give them cards to their favorite stores or restaurants that way they can buy what they want or go out for a nice meal. I know people don't like gift cards as presents, yet I don't see anything wrong with it. Afterall, it's the thought that counts. What do you think about giving gift cards as presents?

@Courtlynn I'd prefer gift cards over receiving something I may not use.

I know that I would be happy to receive a gift card, better if a card that I can spend in different stores.

@dramagirl26 This is what I prefer, because those for one store only are not always appreciated.

@LadyDuck That's the best type of gift card. One that you can spend at different stores.

I have not really given anyone gift cards but i received it and preferred it too. Many often if someone buys something for me i may not like it. But if i have the gift card then i can choose what i really want

Gift cards are money after all and who doesn't like money. I've given them and always got hugs and thank you's along with huge smiles when I did.

@just4him These days I think people prefer to receive gift cards instead of other presents.

@dramagirl26 It's a lot easier because you don't always get what a person likes and gift cards will always fill the bill.

If I can't think of a good gift, or if they live far and I have to mail it, then I think gift cards are a great solution

I think it's the practical thing to do, that way they can get just what they want. I give vouchers often.

I think it is the best idea especially if you don't know what to buy and if you get something they might not enjoy.

I love getting and giving gift cards! My kids and grandkids all like to pick out their own things, so cards work out well. At Christmas we give three gifts to each person. (If three gifts were good enough for Baby Jesus, they're good enough for us!). It's usually a gift card, some cash in a greeting card, and something personal to unwrap.

I get a lot of gift cards from my kids. The reason I don't like them is because I forget t use them

@Freelanzer Unless you use them right away, it's easy to forget them.

I think it's just fine. I give cash or checks to my immediate family. I love spa or restaurant gift cards the best for me.

We give gift cards because it is easier that way for people you don't know well or are hard to shop for. I mean with the gift card they can buy what they want instead of keeping a gift they don't like or a gift they will regift or sell, or return. Cards are just easier and I prefer gift cards over something that I don't want from someone that doesn't know me that well or doesn't know my taste for clothes or other things.

Personally I'd rather give a gift card or cash so they can choose something they want. It seems better than wasting money on a gift that goes unused or they already have one! I always loved getting gift cards or cash as gifts especially when I was in my teens.
