How Often SHOULD You Brush Your Teeth?

I actually thought that you could over do the brushing but I was just reading that you should brush your teeth after anything that you actually chew. I guess that you are okay with a glass of water, but after every snack... you should brush. What do you think? I'm kind of nervous about this because being pre-diabetic, I have 3 meals and 3 snacks. That means that I should brush 6 times a day. How often do you brush?? I wonder if rinsing your mouth would have the same results??

I just brush mine twice a day. Once in the morning and once at night. That is what most dentists recommend as a normal amount. Also, use mouthwash twice a day and floss at least once a day. Sometimes I let the flossing slip to 3 or 4 times a week just because I am lazy even though I know I should do it once a day at least. They also have those tiny toothbrushes that you can put in your purse or pocket to use in between the meals or snacks if you aren't at home to brush your teeth.

I would have thought that THAT would be sufficient... I also have this stick that I ordered ages ago that I use for cleaning my teeth while I'm sitting here at the computer. I didn't mention it because I can't think of the name of it. It literally looks like a stick!

@CaseyRoss9966 So far I haven't seen a down side to not brushing after every time you eat... but I do hate cleanings. I would rather have a filling. If brushing cuts down the time for that... I'm there!!

@Hate2Iron My dentist has never told me I needed to brush after every meal so I will continue to just do it twice a day.

I always brush mine twice a day! I usually chew sugar free gum and drink water after meals though!

I also wondered about chewing gum... We have it in the house all the time and I love the cinnamon flavor. I hear that is supposed to be good for your teeth too!

@Hate2Iron Supposedly chewing the sugar free gum creates more saliva which helps to rinse and neutralise the acid and bacteria from eating! No idea if this is true but I like gum so at least it gives me an excuse

You can brush with no paste. I am prediabetic but donĀ“t eat 6 meals a day.

It's 3 meals and 3 snacks. If I skip one of the snacks... my blood sugar drops like a stone. I even have to be careful that I eat enough at meals so that it ties me over until the first snack. It's been really awful lately!

@thehousewife I have never had anything like you describe regarding a constant thirst and hunger. It could be what I'm going through at the moment, but I find it hard to eat anything. No appetite at all. Hope you can find out what is causing it!!

We were taught to brush when you first get up in the morning, after each meal, after snacks, and before bed, ALWAYS, no excuses.

A few years ago it was recommended twice a day. Morning and before bed.

Ideally you should brush your teeth every time you have your food, in most of the cases it is not possible. But brushing your teeth before going to bed is compulsory. Rinsing your mouth will not have same effect as brushing, it can be done whenever brushing is not possible. If you have a habit of flossing, continue that. You can even use inter-dental toothbrushes instead of Dental floss.

I'm definitely going to up the number of times... I guess that I have been really lucky so far. Have had just one cavity in the last couple of years. I do floss numerous times a day though... just out of habit!

Usually I brush my teeth twice a day. That's in the morning after I get up and in the evening before I go to bed. But I will use the waterpik to clean my teeth after lunch in the office. It is convenient for me.

It depends I think on what health condition you are in or your teeth are in. I see my dentist every month because of my braces for thorough teeth cleaning. And since I have braces I need to clean my teeth after eating. Normally without braces or any special conditions, the dentist would advise to make sure you brush your teeth twice a day or every after meal. But not to over brush because brushing can destroy the enamel of the teeth making it weaker instead of stronger. Flossing is better to get rid of the particles stuck in between teeth and then a moth wash. I also learned recently that when we brush our teeth, we should not neglect brushing our gums as well.

I brush my teeth (and floss) after every meal, I do not get snacks. Rinsing has not the same results.

Twice brushing with paste and after eating cleans the mouth and teeth without paste.

I wish I had some teeth to brush @Hate2Iron . The type of water we had rotted them all out. I think brushing when you get up and go to bed with toothpaste is good and then for the inbetween times, just using the brush.

We were taught after meals and bedtime. That seems adequate.

I brush after I had a meal, which means breakfast, lunch, teatime, dinner and snack. 5 times a day , less one time from yours. Problem is , I have periodintis , a gum disease which is serious losing my teeth. I lost 2 teeth already and my gum is swelling.
