With school graduations this month, I found this topic to be interesting.
It took awhile for Amy Craton, about 50 years worth, but she finally earned her college degree this May.
Craton had put her education on hold in 1962 to return to work and raise her four children following a divorce.
"It feels good to graduate, to finish my college learning, but I have so much more to learn about life" upon being interviewed.
To acheive this hallmark, the college president of Southern New Hampshire University, flew out to Craton's home in Honolulu to present the wheelchair bound alum with her diploma.
She decided on SNHU because it reminded her of memories she had growing up in New England and offered a online degree program.
Craton, who earned her Bachelor of Arts in creative writing and English, is the school's oldest graduate, and university officials believe she may be one of the oldest students in the nation.
As an adult, she moved to California to raise her 4 children and work as an
administrative assistant, until discovering the beautiful island of Hawaii when on vacation.
She fell in love with the island and decided to make it her home.
Craton's biggest challenge wasn't the course work but the six hour time difference between the two states. She often had to stay up past midnight to submit her online work on time.
"If you're thinking about going back to school, do it," she said. "You'll open up a whole new life."
Now that she has her Bachelor's degree Cranton has decided to enroll in a Master's program.
“As long as I get good grades, I’ll be happy,” she said. Amy, with your perseverance there is no doubt you will.

If it took her 50 years to get the BA, she'd better write those masters papers a lot more quickly or she isn't going to make it.

Yes, she is actually confined to a wheelchair and could not attend the ceremony. Very classy on SNHU's part
