Random Things I've Searched on Ebay : Family Bible.

I can not say that I completely understand this myself. Why would anyone sell or otherwise give away their family bibles? I imagine that many of these bibles on ebay were found at estate sales or thrift type shops, maybe they were found in abandoned homes. What I don't understand is why the family of the person who owned the bible would have not taken it for themselves? I am not religious in any way but if I had the opportunity to have that family bible passed down to me? I would take it. Obviously, I am sure there are cases where the bible was in the hands of the last surviving family member, but surely there's some distant and strange cousin to hand it off to? I don't know, I don't understand it. I guess I appreciate history, especially that of family, a little bit more than others. I typed in "1700's family bible" for this search. Though I imagine I could have simply put "family bible" and had many more results.

Most of those from that era could be deemed as historic. This family may need money and will sell whatever it takes to get it. Maybe they think some people collect bibles.

I guess there are many good reasons for it - especially that of the need for money. I still don't think I could part with it personally.Though I probably would be one of the ones that would buy it.

We have a programme over here called Heir Hunters and it always surprises me how many people sadly die with no known family, even though it is often discovered that they have siblings or cousins who they lost contact with fifty years before. My brother buys photographs from eBay, usually from house clearances. I buy photos and postcards at antique fairs. I love thinking about the history behind them.

I actually searched for "Old Tin Types" on ebay and found some.. I thought about purchasing one or two but I also feel a bit weird about having tin types or any picture of people who arent' family. Still, like you, I find the history or potential history behind them interesting. What channel does Heir Hunters come on for you? I have a VPN and I want to see if I could access it.
