The Horse has been selected for a Lifetime Achievement Award and an $895 stipend!

Look what I received via email the other day! "We are pleased to announce that Marquis Who's Who has selected you for our official 2017 Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. You have been selected to receive this prestigious award as a result of your hard work and dedication to your profession." Reading on, it tells me that I will receive and on-line narrative that "comes with online distribution to all the major search engines for higher visibility" and "a custom diamond desk piece for home or office display." Clicking through to the next page, I see that my stipend for receiving this award is $895! That will more than pay for my recent truck repair. But here's the strange part. The next page doesn't have a place for me to submit my most recent biographical information. I've been at the same College for 20 years, but I left my position as child psychologist at a drug rehab program for my more recent position as a "mentor" at a government-funded agency. Further, it didn't ask for my current address so the could send me my stipend. And there was an "Add to Cart" icon! How weird. I wrote them back, asking what additional information they need, and how and when I will receive my stipend, but strangely, I have not heard back from them. Am I misunderstanding something? Their email suggested great time-urgency!

Well I'm glad you won't be adding a scam to that cart - so congratulations for that! Oh man, this Who's Who stuff is still around?

@TheHorse I don't know about this history of it, but I actually fell for it once . It was the high school one . . . I thought it would look great on my college application to say I was listed as some high achiever in a publication . But that was many years ago - and back then it sure didn't cost three digits!

@much2say Maybe it actually did show some degree of earnestness in those days. They (Who's Who) didn't start going after me until I had started teaching.

I guess it is. I wonder if there was once some prestige around being selected to be in Who's Who.

@TheHorse Oh dear..is it a scam? There sometimes is a catch. I also had to buy a book with poetry, when I was chosen to participate.

@librarygeek1980 As I told a new member (who asked whether one could live off of MyLot earnings alone), I live entirely off of MyLot earnings and reside in a cardboard refrigerator box. I'm glad that qualifies me for such an award.

It seems there are many people who want to award us with something, but they often have strings attached.

There's no such thing as a free lunch. In this case, they didn't ever really pretend that the money was coming my way. I wonder if the diamonds in the desk thingie come from discarded phono cartridges.

It's a sad thing, isn't it? That fact that it sometimes works shows how desperate many of us are for validation.

If this email asks for your social to " verify" who you are, walk away! For me this has scam written all over it! BUT who am I? I have never had such dedication to one job, well they just don`t give awards to landladies.

Heh Heh. Marquis Who's Who actually used to have some "prestige" associated with it, I think. But it appears they've turned themselves into something of a "vanity press," like Poetry.com. Not quite a scam, but just silliness for those who need validation.

It's a "vanity press," like Poetry.com. They want YOU to send THEM hundreds of dollars so they can include your biographical information in some useless book.
