What is art ?

Hello beautiful souls So I am asking a very general question, but I often find myself twisted by the very meaning of Art. There are people who go to expensive schools and when they leave the school, it is to be believed that they are artists, but are they ? And there are people who never get the chance to go to any kind of school, but there is a fire burning inside them with passion which guides them to create, and many educated people think they are not artists but I can not agree with that. I myself, am an educated artist and I studied arts for all my life. But one thing I learned is that universities and schools teach nothing about art to us, they just show us what it is, they discuss the artists while they were not giving a damn about the theoretical issues while they were alive. I think art arises from a simple smile to a stranger in a rainy street, or from a deep fear that is not to explained by words, but it surely doesn't come from sitting behind the tables of schools, right ? So as I go further and further in my artistic researches, both in choreography and painting, this questions becomes more and more important, and it's one of my very favorite topics to discuss. What do you think about arts ? How can you explain what art is ? PS : The picture is me covering myself by Woody Allan's mask that I made, the collection is called tree of life. What do you think about it ?

Great question! Personally, I think art is a mean to express and communicate. I'm more into the meaning than the aesthetics, but the best artworks should contain both. Obviously art isn't just for the eye, I consider music, perfumes or novels to be art: as long as it's something that expresses something and evokes emotions, then it's art. It's important to learn the tricks for being able to turn the idea you have in mind into something others can enjoy, therefore study is useful for this matter. However, art is something we all should be able to create, the human body and mind itself is art, we're made of art ourselves! I really like your mask! I like how it's more than a portrait, and the shades and facial expression give a lot of character to it.

I totally agree with you. I've had periods in my life where a cup of tea was considered an artwork for me, lol. We have this discussion a lot with our professors who believe art is both aesthetics and personal expression. For me the side of emotions and expression has always been heavier that's why I can't cope much with "Elitism" since it's more about analyzing an art work and not creating any art. So Sabrina are you an artist ?

@pocabellla I didn't attend art schools, but I also believe in self-teaching. Well, I haven't created a lot of art, lack of tools most of the time. I feel like I can't consider myself to be an artist yet, but I need to work on that. I don't plan to die without having done anything on that field, you know.

I recognised Woody Allan at once. What you've asked here is a good topic for discussions. Everyone will have to say something on it. Especially the ones who despise art, especially modern art, know exactly why something is not art. Yet, there is no final answer.

Artists are born I think hahaha. I mean like having good vocal chords and/or diaphragm for singing etc. But everyone can be an artist on their own way I guess. Yah your right I think, although schools are good because it helps you dig deeper to the mental meaning of art but somehow it kinds of destroys the emotional depth of it hahaha.
