I'm Sick of Harry Potter

I used to really love the Harry Potter series. I wasn't happy with the last two books and really despised the way it ended. I felt like J.K. Rowling rushed the last book so the movie studio could hurry up and put out another movie using the same cast. (And I was never a fan of the movies -- in fact they ruined the books for me because once the movies started coming out, it changed the way I saw the characters when I read the books. Whatever picture I had painted of them in my mind was replaced with the actors who played them.) Anyway. It's been 10 years since the last book came out, and I don't understand why the mania surrounding that series has never died down. The media is constantly sharing "news" about the Hogwarts universe that the author decides to share online, and at this point it just feels like it's being milked for all it's worth. (The most recent "news" I read was that Harry Potter's grandfather's name was also Harry Potter. I mean really, why does anyone need to know that? Who cares?) Now everyone is going hog wild (or Hogwarts wild) over it being the 20th anniversary since the first book's release. I couldn't care less. I can't become nostalgic for something if it never goes away. I also don't care for how those books changed the standards for YA fiction, not necessarily for the better. Before YA novels were short, maybe 200 pages or less. Now they are all 500+ epic novels when they really don't need to be. Even my favorite YA authors from my own youth are latching onto that trend. I'm also burned out on all the fantasy knock-off Harry Potter books cluttering store shelves. I get daily emails on ebook deals and it's the same boring plots regurgitated over and over again -- young kids going to some magic school getting into some kind of major conflict that disrupts the order of things, and only they can save the day (and usually some kind of love triangle is thrown in the mix.) Ugh. And it's not just those fantasy books that are epic novels, non-fantasy genres are way too long too. Personally I like reading shorter books, and as a YA author, I prefer writing shorter books. I hate this publishing trend. If a book is too thick I won't even attempt to read it unless it sounds really good or something about it draws me in. A lot of books just seem to be overly long for the sake of having more pages. Anyway. I wish Harry Potter would go away for a while so maybe I could one day go back and enjoy the series again. Like I said, you can't miss something or grow nostalgic for it if it never goes away. But it seems like millennials don't want to ever give up anything, and this series obsession is proof of it. Everything else that was popular at some point in time fades away for a while after it's had its run, but not Harry Potter. Why is that, I wonder?

They really aren't that good when I try to go back and read them. I only liked the first four books. Everything after that seemed sloppy and like it was just written to be made into a movie.

We only watch the three series and my daughter said the same thing .. the movie ruined the book. Now she doesn't watch the other episodes because of same reason.

@Srbageldog My daughter have this habit of reading the book first before watching the movie so she can compare.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. I hated the movies. They didn't capture the spirit of the books at all and the actors weren't how I pictured the characters.

Yes, I sell Pocket Watches that have Harry Potter on them, and you should see some of the reactions from people when they see them. Wow, 20 yrs since the first book? Interesting, and I totally agree that the books are way better than the movies, like most books are. Sometimes it makes you wonder when books or movies loose their finesse why people continue to allow others to prompt them to continue them?

To be fair it was one of the first books to get non readers excited to read. That being said though, I pretty much agree with you. I've never been a huge Harry Potter fan. I have watched the movies but never read the books because of their length and because they aren't really a genre I'm interested in. I saw like the first 3 movies and then stopped watching them. They're not bad movies but they're the kind of movies I watch once and then I'm good. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

@Srbageldog Well, I did say ONE of but for that time period it was one of the few books kids took to. I knew more kids that read Harry Potter than kids who read Goosebumps or babysitters club. I mean Harry Potter had more appeal to it than a lot of those that came before it, not that it appealed to me. I never really read them. I think I got to like page 5 of the first book lol. I just think it had something that drew kids in. I mean I read both Goosebumps and The Babysitters club along with the box car children books but a lot of kids wanted something more exciting, something none of those books offered. I don't always understand the appeal myself but I guess in other ways I can understand it. I just hate that everyone is now trying to mimic them in some way. Ever since Harry Potter, it seems as though everyone is trying to put their own spin on them and create something similar and I think that annoys me more than Harry Potter itself. Now there are so many books about witches and wizards and don't on anything remotely super natural.

Not really, Goosebumps and the Baby-Sitters Club got non-readers excited to read too, which was why they were popular. There's always been some type of children's/YA series that stirred up kids' interest. If you've seen one Harry Potter movie, you've basically seen them all (same goes for the books.) Same exact format for each book/movie, same villain throughout the entire series, and becomes very predictable after a while. Later on those books weren't even really aimed at kids.

@sissy15 I think the BSC and Goosebumps might have been a bit "before your time," because they were all the rage when I was in elementary school. :p Well, Goosebumps didn't hit until I was in fourth grade. Harry Potter didn't come out until I was on my way out of middle school, so I had absolutely no interest in reading it. I did eventually read it and I enjoyed the first four books, but after that it was all downhill. And ugh, don't get me started on all those copycat books. Now if I see a book's description involves wizards, witchcraft, or some other supernatural powers and a school for gifted kids or teens, I just go "NOPE!" Not reading it. There is an over-saturation of that genre.

The first books were good and I also never liked the movie. It's a shame when a movie changes the way you pictured the characters, it happened to me with other books.

@Srbageldog I fully agree, it was the same for me when I watched the "Da Vinci Code" after reading the book. Many characters were so different from the book and I did not like the changes at all.

I liked the books until the movies started coming out. I hate when movies change the way you view the book. Completely ruins it.
