Only for a day

This flower and its many hybrids bloom only for a day. They are called daylilies and can be found up and down rural roadways.
Their descendants may be shorter or taller. Often they are much more compact. I have seen them bright golden yellow. That variety is sold as Stella d'Oro. I have also seen them in pastels. @marsha32 has some very compact pale peach ones. There are some that are deep dark rust colored. All are just beautiful.
I wonder how beautiful we would try to make our world if we could only do so for a day.
Onions and garlic, shallots and chives are also from this family, but we grow them mainly because they flavor our world.
So there are two things we can do. . . we can add beauty to the world or enhance the flavor.

Maybe that is a good lesson for a lot of things. I like blooming plants better than cut flowers.

@GardenGerty I agree. I think it is nice to have them in the pots. You can bring them inside the house once and while.

People in our area eat these flowers @GardenGarty
You probably know these are yummy. Grown by some of our friends here who sell commercially (no bug spray ever) these are mixed in with their salad packages at the market.

That actually sounds quite good. Do they pull out the stamens? I do not spray anything, not bugs not weeds.

I had two patches of daylilies at my last place, but I didn't bring any with me to my new place. Not enough room for everything. I did bring my chives, though. I like their purple blooms, as well as their delicate flavor in salads and cottage cheese.

I brought just this one when I moved, but it turns out there is a whole patch of them and a purple flower, phlox, I think in the back. I think I need some chives in my front herb garden. I should make a point to get some.

@GardenGerty I also brought some creeping phlox, lamium, peony, rose campium, two itty bitty hardy hibiscus (rose of sharon), some irises... would have loved to bring my wrought iron trellis complete with the climbing roses and clematis, but that would have been pushing it, wouldn't it?

@GardenGerty The soil is so different in different parts of the world. When I moved to Florida from Pennsylvania/New Jersey, things that grew up there will not grow here. I joined a horticulture class and the instructor told me that. The last time I went to New Jersey, I bought the plants up there and brought them back to Florida and planted them in pots with potting soil I bought at Home Depot. They are thriving and I have given my neighbor some of them.

I was thinking all plants really are at the top of the food chain, so yes they are useful to animals and us but they are also just beautiful.

I brought this one in my move, along with an iris or two and an asiatic lily, the kind that last.

It's lovely... pity it lasts such a short time... but that builds the anticipation and appreciationwhen it does bloom.... and anything that adds more beauty to our world... is great...however brief it is

The colors are great no matter what lily they are. And they survive and persist. At my other house I had white lilies that had been someone's Easter lily at one time. I have some on the side of my house here that have been neglected and have not bloomed since I have been here. I am moving them. I suspect they are the old fashioned tiger lilies.

@GardenGerty I agree with the lily colors. They are all so pretty and different. The older they get the better they get as they spread.

Day lilies are one of my summer favorites and the yard is filled with many colors of them, I dont have any onions or garlic growing, so I reckon I am bland.

I read somewhere that people do eat these blooms. Both beauty and flavor are great.
