New Laws as of July 1, 2017

United States

Some of the new laws starting Saturday, July 1st in Tennessee are making me laugh, others not so much! With 130 new laws how do they keep things straight? And, how to they enforce them? An example of one of the new laws really made me smile for some reason. You all know that people who own property and don't want others intruding on it usually post a yellow and black "No Trespassing" sign. We have had many of those signs on our various properties over 17 years living in Tennessee. Well, now we can throw them out.... The new law regarding posting no trespassing requires no signs - instead we can paint tree trunks or posts purple. I guess purple is the new yellow and black! If they asked my opinion - I prefer the yellow and black signs since I am not a purple fan! Photo from Pixbay

So now you have to remove all those signs and and throw them ---where? There is going to be a shortage of purple paint too.

No, you can leave the signs - but if you want you can do the purple paint instead.

Let me make a prediction right now, regarding the trespassing law: someone's gonna get hurt while trespassing and will sue, claiming he/she is color blind and couldn't tell that there was purple on the tree trunks. Newton's Third Law of Modern Life: for every law there is a lawyer looking to file a lawsuit.

The same could be said for the yellow/black signs. That's why lawyers exist - to help make stupid people (and themselves) rich.

That is an odd thing to do. Why in the world did they change it to painting purple? They must have been bored the day they made that law.

@HazySue Or they own a paint company and need to push the purple.

So everyone sees purple and automatically knows not to trespass? We living in a world where words are being eliminated.

I guess that's the assumption but most back woods people will never hear of this law.

Now I'm wondering what the no trespassing laws are in TX. I'll have to look into that. Dang it, always with the smoke.

It could be a law that your state put up for reconsideration on the last ballot to be voted on @AbbyGreenhill

I guess technically this isn't a law. It's a silly change.

@rebelann The law says: You can mark trees and posts with purple paint as an alternative to posting signs that trespassing is prohibited. That doesn't say you 'have to'...

I think each state and the federal government needs a new rule regarding making new laws - No new law can be passed unless an old law is repealed. How can Tennessee, a state that's been around for over 200 years, possibly need 130 new laws in one year?

I am not at all a fan of purple and it's not a well visible color, at difference of the yellow, that is very visible.

@AbbyGreenhill It's a silly law, sometimes I wonder why some laws are changed. This is ridiculous.

Yes, the others are more visible and only people who actually know about this rule/law will have a clue about why trees are now purple.

Oh good grief @AbbyGreenhill and for those who are color blind? At least on the previous signs there was verbiage.

I would prefer the signs also and not have to paint anything. I shouldn't think it was good for the trees to be painted either.

Wow, if that law past here, I know one guy in my neighborhood who would be ticked off. He has one of those signs in his yard. He is one of those who don't trust anybody and is always on the alert. I think he is kind of eccentric but in a way he is watching out for the neighborhood.

You don't have to take the old ones down. They just added this purple thing. We watch, we have to. when you live in the boonies the Sheriff rides down our road maybe once a day. There are a few of us who keep an eye out.

This law has one huge flaw that I can see, so to speak. People with red-green color deficient color blindness, like my younger son, cannot see purple. To them it looks blue. If people with this condition see these objects painted purple, they will think they are blue and decide the person who painted them must be a Duke or Kentucky fan.

We don't allow Duke Or KY fans in our sate!

Purple is not a striking color for me. The yellow and black ones were better than purple.

What committee decided on that color? If you leave your yellow and black sign up are you fined? Another frivolous law designed to confuse Tennesseans. Does one of those lawmakers own a paint store on the side? Ridiculous!!!

Technically it's not a law. Politicians or a paint company, who knows. I am not confused at all
