Board Games for Bored People

While at our son’s in Ireland, we played a lot of board games. We were there about three weeks and while we camped away from time to time, we were also with them for quite a few nights. It seemed to take a week or more before we even looked like running out of new games to play. They rarely seem to watch TV which accounts for some of their passion for games I guess. We enjoyed the games although some seemed a bit complicated at first. Our son and his wife play with friends or with the various nieces and nephews who visit from time to time. I think my favourite was called ‘Ticket to Ride’ where you have to get from one place to another by train. The one we played was based on the USA but apparently they are available using the train lines of other countries. This just might be one game I’ll buy when we get back to Australia. The photo shows a board game but not 'Ticket to Ride'.

But riding by train is much more common in Europe than in Australia!

I have no idea how the game would work if they used Australian train destinations. There is only one train from East to West for a start.

@JudyEv I've heard about that. It's more a touristy thing, isn't it? No business person would take it to get to their destination in a leisurely way.

@MALUSE You're right. It is a touristy thing as no locals can afford the fare!

of course, as soon as i read 'ticket to ride' the beatles song started playing in my head. i'll be game about learning new board games, but with my curiosity, i would also take a peek at local shows, newscasts and commercials, even if i don't understand the language. so did you or vince ever win in any of the games you played?

@JudyEv can't help giggling at "put up their dishes" and imaging shiny white dinner plates. haha! how times and terms have changed!

We certainly held our own in the games. We don't have a TV in the motor-home. There is barely room for it but many of the motor-homes we see put up their dishes each evening.

@hereandthere I'm glad I gave you a giggle. Of course, I'm sure you worked out that I meant satellite dishes. And yes, times have changed considerably.

Some were complicated and it took a second game or three to really get the hang of them.

Personally I am not fond of board games at all. Except for Scrabble in both English and French.

There is a huge variety of games now. I had no idea there was so much choice. Some are 'co-operative' in that you all join forces to beat the 'game'. I was surprised how interesting they were.

@judyev A good board game is a better way of spending the evening with people you don't see that often than watching TV - you can do that on your own at home. I remember one we had long time ago called GO which involved players travelling the world.

That's for sure and much easier than trying to make conversation for 3 or 4 hours especially if you have to watch everything you say.

@JudyEv Oh those conversations I usually get all wrong and end up bruised in the ribs from my more aware wife.

I really enjoyed playing most of the games. Some you all play towards the same goal of beating the game itself.

We played board games when our son was little. Today we just don't play it any more. I remember at that time my husband and I lost it to our son secrely and therefore he was happy because he won the game. Then he could go to bed happily

I've done that with our kids too - and my elderly mother. Mum could always hold her own until she got really old.

That sounds a fun game too. I know a few different patience/solitaire card games if I have no-one to play with.

The one on the table is called 'Castles' and you get to build your own castle. I enjoyed that too and it has the advantage that you can't really tell who is going to win until you start adding up all the bits and pieces at the end.

I think so too. Some of the games involves everyone working together to beat the 'game' so they are good too. And a bit different.

@JudyEv I haven't played any board games in a long time, because it isn't what we do. My family wants to move around more. I don't even think we have one in the house any more.

I used to like all kinds of board games such as Monopoly. However my hubby is not very much into board games. He would rather work on his laptop or watch documentaries. I always work on my PC and have an old PC nearby playing some movie or music video.
