Why my dad rocks

I know I did one of these posts about my mom for mother's day and I am way behind in posts... it was tempting to post about the 4th of July (which was yesterday) - however I thought I have enough catch up to do so will start with dad's day which was back in June. If you have been reading my posts for awhile you probably have already gathered the fact that my dad and I are sort of strained due to his many and various mental illnesses. However it is easy to talk about the bad as that seems to stand out in the mind better, but he really can be an excellent person as well. Take this example from dad's day this year. My mom and I got him a whole bag full of treats - dvd from a series he watches, baseball cap that he wanted, along with other various cool stuff... I had tossed in an agate I had found. A Lake Superior agate (like the ones mentioned in the link.) It was a nice agate but free to me and I thought he might like it. I didn't think it would be his favorite thing in the bag. He asked me what I wanted him to make out of it for myself -- (since he makes jewelry) and I said - "make something for you from it, it's dad's day!

That was nice of your dad, and if he wants to make something for you, let him. It would probably give him more pleasure that way.

True, he did polish it and now says he's giving it to me, so I won't fight him anymore on it

I like the idea of making your own jewelry. One type is making rings out of coins. I find this quite a good hobby for some people to transform a large coin and turn it into a shiny ring. agate is something I think I remember seeing I bought a rock that was cut in half and inside was full of multi-colored crystals. Is that more or less what an agate rock looks like? If so it is very nice.

The coin jewelry is cool - I have seen people who carve out the design part of coins for jewelry use. It's way cool. Your rock sounds more like a geode of some sort... what are the different colors of crystals? Some geodes have quartz inside , quartz comes in many colors but once colored is known by different names. Purple quartz is Amethyst, Pink is Rose Quartz, Brown is Smokey Quartz, Yellow quartz is Citrine. Agates usually are different -- not crystals -- red/orange stones sometimes with bands of white and sometimes with inclusions of black.

I'm happy to hear he had such a nice day. Dads enjoy making things for their children, so let him. Agates are very pretty!!!!

That was nice of you. My grandpa had a rock polisher, and he would make jewelry from them. Sold quite a few of them, too.

Your dad was thinking of you in spite of his illness. That's sweet.
