another playdate

It seemed like forever to get to today, but I got back to the shelter today. I was given the free reign of the cat room again, so I brought my little guy out of his cage and since I couldn't find the toy we had last week, I tossed a little green mouse around, and he played his little heart out! He chased it, tossed it up in the air, rolled around with it, climbed just about everything in the room and pretty much went a thousand miles an hour. Of course, he still hides from me! And that's normal. I smell so different to him. I put him in my arms to snuggle and he grabs onto my shoulder to take off running! This one is not going to be a lap cat by any means! He's a lean, mean playing machine! One of the gals at the shelter convinced me to go back tomorrow. She showed me where our favorite toy is stashed, so now I can take it out and play with him for as long as I want. Or, until I wear him out again! Although today, with the house, he wore me out first! lol But he did go right to sleep when I put him back in his cage. So I know we had an effective play date. How I'd love to volunteer there to go in and play with the cats and kittens! I don't know if they take volunteers like that, but I'm going to ask. I love the atmosphere at the shelter and how caring everyone is. I know I'll have more than a full time job caring for him once he comes home, but some of those others really want to get out and play, too! And my heart just breaks for them! If people come in and see more of the cats out and playing, maybe they'd get adopted faster. Who knows? Well, it can't hurt to ask. Claudia

My cat is another one who doesn't like to sit on my shoulder. She will have a snooze on the arm of the chair while I am sat in there

It's going to be interesting to see where the new little guy will enjoy hanging out when he does get tired (which probably won't be too often!) LOL My last cat wasn't exactly a snuggle bunny, but I'd taught her from a very young age to tolerate me picking her up and cuddling with her for little bits at a time. I will try to do that with my new kitten. I've been doing that at the shelter right before putting him down and playing. So maybe he'll come to learn that first we snuggle and then we play! fingers crossed!

@CRK109 My new house guest doesn't like being picked up, but otherwise is rather chatty especially when she first comes in from the great outdoors. She tells me she is home while still in the kitchen!

Spending time with those lonely cats and kittens would make my day. Two of the kittens who are pending their adoptions kept crying and crying to me to get them and play, too, and I hated that I couldn't. I went over and talked with them, though, and played with some of the larger cats who kept putting their paws out to me.

@CRK109 Doesn't that make you feel really bad. I help out at a shelter when they call me to help. Some of those dogs and cats are so scared and shaking all over because they have been mistreated.

Poor cats they would love so much to come out and play with someone. I am sure your little kitten will learn soon not to hide from you.

I hope you do ask. Surely it's a win-win if a volunteer will come in and give the cats and kittens some stimulation.

Here they do let volunteers come in and play with those pets up for adoption. Many we know got their pets this way and it is wonderful for the pets who are waiting for that special someone @CRK109

No it can't hurt to ask. And i hope they do allow that. Although youd think the workers would take them out and play with them alot..

First of all I want to thank you Claudia for what you are doing. It is special what you are doing and it makes a difference. I do not believe that animals at the shelters have a good time and there are shelters with not enough room for them to breathe. You never know the cat may turn out to be a lap cat. All animals ask for in life is a nice home with people that treat them as part of the family and not only feed them but give them the love they need and be patient with them to get used to their surroundings and see that they will not be abandoned again. Just talk to your little one. How old is the little one? How did you get the little one?
