A Handful of Hours

The young fellow at Best Buy told me my laptop would be ready in a "handful of hours." Well, I am not sure how many hours are in a "handful of hours," but that "handful of hours" response to a wait-time question sure would come in handy for those who haven't a clue as to how many hours a particular job will take. On the other hand, perhaps those who have very large hands can hold a substantial amount of hours in their hands, which would lead to a long wait for the customer. And, I suppose those with small hands would most likely have the job completed in fewer hours than the large-hand folks. I do wish I had gotten a look at the young person's hands to get an idea of how many hours I will have to wait until my laptop is ready for pickup.

First time I had heard that. A handful would be two hours tops to me no matter what size the hands.

Apparently, the handful at Best Buy means lots of hours. Still waiting.

@TiarasOceanView Well, 5 hours so far. I think tomorrow will be the day. Never knew a handful of hours was so many hours.

He must have assumed that I know exactly how many hours are in a handful of hours. I do not.

That's too unspecific hours to wait. For me, I usually asked the specific time. I hate waiting for something or someone.

@Corbin5 I think it is the best thing to do. Do they offer home service? I think that would be more convenient and no need to wait for long hours.

@Shavkat Yes, they offer home service, but the store is just a few minutes drive from our home, so it is easy to take in things for repair. May use their home service the next time.

That certainly is a funny way of putting a time frame on your laptop but how did you even think up small hands vs large hands as an analogy? Quite a great way of summing up your Best Buy visit with a great post here.

He made it seem like just an hour or two when he said it, but that is not the case. No problem. I can wait.

That's funny! I've never heard of the expression "handful of hours." But I guess that's a very generic way of saying he doesn't know exactly how long it will take to fix the laptop!

@Corbin5 Which is probably what he was thinking in his head! But he would have looked like an idiot if he had said that out loud to you. Would have made him seem incompetent.

I do believe it will be a handful of days. They need to hire more people. One guy to serve all does not work out that well.

It probably depends also of the number of fingers : if he works like a horse, it may take less time as horses have only 1 finger.

Never heard this expression before but I would say 10 hours for the 10 fingers or 2 hours for the 2 hands. I wonder what is the right answer for this one. Good topic!

@Corbin5 that happens in lots of shops here - one staff member rushed off his feet - others stand around doing as little as possible

That makes sense to me @Corbin5 (hand size). Since my hands are 7 and 3/4" from wrist to tip of middle finger and 3 and 1/2" from side to side; depending on the job, it could be quick.

Ha ha ha, just like the slang words in our rural village. When a visitor who walked through the sloping mountains and asked where is the village, the villager will just answer "just there"... but that 'just there' answer would take 2 more hours of walking before reaching the village.
