~Do You Eat Fast Or Slow?~

I was discussing this with someone because I don't put a time limit on my kids for meals. If we are going somewhere I prepare things earlier so they have enough time to eat at a normal pace. I don't want them shoving food down their throat and having stomach issues. I don't see a point in making them eat super fast or why it matters how long it takes them to eat. If they want cold food that's up to them! Lol. Did you know it's much healthier to eat at a slower pace??

@amadeo I wonder why it bothers your neck to eat slowly? Have you told a doctor about it?

I guess we're always on the go go go . . . so I tend to swallow my meals . The kids will eat at their pace whatever we do . . . I can't even get them to hurry up the eating even if I try .

@LovingMyBabies That's good . . . I wish things were more laid back here! If anyone it's me who needs to change the way I eat . . . I also think a lot of times I can be a human garbage disposal too (eating up the leftovers!!).

@much2say Better you than me, I couldn't live that way. We are very laid back here, thank God! My kids eat at their own pace and after reading what I found I wouldn't have it any other way. =)

Many people do not know that digestion begins in the mouth. It is a good idea to chew your food very well. Eating fast can cause all kinds of problems because this means you aren't chewing enough so this could add to digestive problems.

Yes, I know since I was a kid that eating slow is much healthier, but I am a fast eater and I cannot slow down. My husband is very (VERY) slow, he gets me mad.

@LovingMyBabies I had the habit to eat fast because I had no time when I started to work, I only had half an hour and I went home and back to the office every day. Once you get a habit it's hard to go back.

@LadyDuck I would encourage you not to get angry with your husband as it's healthier that he's eating slowly. I heard a very good comment to choose your battles wisely!

I've always known that it is healthier to eat at a slower pace, but I have always been a fast eater. Not sure why, but I just really devour my food quickly. Maybe it's because I'm always starving! haha I remember growing up that we would always eat meals as a family at the dinner table. The rule was that no one could get up and leave the table until everyone was finished with their meal. My little brother was the slowest eater in the world, and it seemed like it took him hours to finish his meals. I would always get so frustrated with him! I'm sure it was probably like only 5 minutes or so, but it seemed like it took him an hour to finish after everyone else was done!

@moffittjc I am sure it was frustrating waiting on your brother if he was a slow eater! Lol.

@LovingMyBabies It was very antagonizing! I'm sure it was only mere minutes of waiting, but as a kid each minute seems like an hour, especially when you are eagerly waiting to leave the dinner table to go have fun and play! It's funny, because my son is a slow eater, and my daughter is always getting aggravated at him because whenever we go out to eat, we have to wait on him to finish before we can leave.

Absolutely @LovingMyBabies . Most people wolf their food and don't chew it properly and then wonder why they have Acid Reflux.

@LovingMyBabies And then people wonder why they have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). We all know, "from the tummy to the bum"; so if the food isn't breaking down correctly because it's being sent down the gullet in big chunks....well......ya know what I mean?

I don't eat quickly unless it is the in the morning before work. Then I really don't have much more than 10 minutes to eat whatever it is I'm having. Otherwise I take my time.

I usually am a pretty slow eater, but that is also because I am usually multi tasking while I eat and doing a couple different things as well as eating. It kinda drives me crazy to see people who look like they are inhaling their food.

@thislittlepennyearns Yeah I'm the same way. My kids eat at their own pace too. I don't think there's any reason to inhale food.

For some weird reason I eat kind of fast. Not like a pig or anything, I just eat faster than most people do. It helps me now that I am a parent because I don't have time to sit there and enjoy my food lol

@Mpaul730 I get up a lot during meals since I have 5 children but that just means I get my meals done even slower than before kids! Lol

@Mpaul730 That's the usual for children. Lol. Mine do the same thing-my food tastes better than theirs apparently!

@LovingMyBabies oh wow we have 6 kids. I know exactly how you feel. One thing that drives me insane is when we feed the kids and my wife attempts to sit down and eat and our 3 year old wants whatever is on her plate. Even though she just ate a big meal, she will take anything off my wife's plate -_-

I am beginning to realize that...slow meal is always the safest option...but if that is so, why is it that when we are watching TV engrossed in movies or whatever, we eat more.

Yes, I agree its much healthier to eat slowly. However, I am a fast eater. Don't know how to slow myself down. Maybe smaller bites and chewing more on purpose?

I think you sometimes must put limits. My daughter was allowed to take as long as she liked when staying with grandparents for awhile and when she returned I noticed trends that looked anorexic so I limited the time she had a plate in front of her. She began to eat normally within a week.

@Jeanniemaries Well if there is a health issue causing them weight loss then that's different. I don't want eating to be a race in my home since it's something that should be enjoyed and not rushed through. I can't stand seeing kids shoving food down their throats-gross.

@LovingMyBabies yes when kids just bolt their food and run it's very annoying. It's hard to understand how parents don't teach their kids to eat properly.
