Favorite "Talk" Songs #2 - "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love"

We are at #2 in my Favorite "Talk" Songs series, which celebrates songs with "talk," or a variation, in the title. The second spot in this countdown belongs to "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" by the mighty Van Halen. I found a few interesting factoids about this one. When guitarist Eddie Van Halen wrote "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love," he didn't feel it was good enough, and hung on to it for a year before finally showing it to his bandmates. Which is odd, because it's arguably their best song, with one of rock music's most instantly recognizable guitar riffs. Interestingly, Eddie intended for it to be a punk song, which, obviously, didn't turn out that way. It is, however, one of the few David Lee Roth songs that Sammy Hagar would willingly sing after replacing Roth as the band's vocalist. In the late 1990's, the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team played "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" after Flyers goals. The song has also been used on both South Park, and The Sopranos. And yet, the single did not chart, but it gets played on the radio so much that you would assume that it had been a #1 hit. It's classic Van Halen. Enjoy! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

I have a love/hate relationship with this song. I don't know if I love or hate it.

Yeah, never thought of this as a punk song. Did use to wear this song out back in the day though.

Wow, I never realized the song never charted. I assumed it was one of their biggest hits which it is because you can't always go by Billboard position.

I know. It's possibly their biggest song. Anybody that listens to rock knows that riff right away, and probably cranks it up.

Not too familiar with VH, except for jump, and hadn't heard this one before. Think I'll stick to Jump!

@teamfreak16 I think that with music, if I can associate it with an event or time that affects how much I like it... or someting like that!

I know. It's probably their best song. Weird, to say the least.

You know I'd rather have the Sam Halen™ version, but I'm not fond of much of anything they ever did....except "Dreams."

Very good song post David Lee Roth. I always felt they were a great band. "Runnin' With The Devil" is a classic. "Dance The Night Away" was another. They were always charting hits in the late 70's into the 80's. Carried on the hard rock style when punk, new wave and disco were on the airwaves.

They were the ultimate 80's party band. You couldn't go wrong throwing a Van Halen record on during a party.
