Pull the chain for a shower? That's a new one

We have now stayed in a number of different camping grounds in France and caravan parks and each has had its own unique features. All have been perfectly adequate but sometimes a feature will still surprise me. The showers vary in the ways they operate. This year so far we have had to pay extra for showers just once. Several have a push-button which runs water for about 30 seconds. The water then stops and you just push it again to get another 30 seconds. Some of these are not adjustable as regards the temperature of the water although the water has always been nice and hot. One place in the Pyrenees was slightly different. The shower had a chain much like flushing toilets used to have when I was a child. In the shower you pulled the chain and within a short time you had hot water. However as soon as you released the chain the water stopped which meant you had to do everything with one hand or soap first and rinse after. A bit tricky when trying to wash long hair. The chain was the right length to hold in your mouth but I wasn’t sure my teeth were up to keeping pressure on the chain throughout a shower.

I agree with @JolietJake, it's the only way they found to prevent wasting water. I have seen this kind of showers at the beaches in Italy. I would never use my teeth for something many hands have touched.

I wouldn't either Anna. I just meant it as a joke. The ones that cut off after 30 seconds also encouraged shorter showers but weren't so inconvenient.

@JudyEv We have sinks in the public toilets that cut after about 30 seconds, it is extremely annoying too.

That's a smart technique to save water. But I don't think that everybody likes the repeated action of pushing.

The chain one was the worst as the water instantly stopped as soon as you released the chain

I remember seeing something like that on Gilligan's Island, one of our old tv shows, and boy did I get a kick out of that ..... I have never seen one in person though. I wouldn't have put that chain in my mouth no matter what, it just sounds unsanitary.

I wouldn't hold it in my mouth either. I just wrote it as a joke but I should have put a smiley face after it.

They have a shower-affair here as you go through to on-site swimming pools too.

@valmnz Our toilets at school had chains for flushing. When we got a septic tank on the farm, I thought we'd have a chain-flush but we skipped the chain and went straight to a push-button. Very upmarket!

I wouldn't be holding it in my teeth either. If we'd been there for a few days I'd have tied a string on the chain and put my foot on it.

It's funny how different things are around the world! I love hearing about these showers! I've never experienced a shower will a pull chain like that! It's one of those experiences you will probably remember forever!

What's very common to some people makes a big impression on others. The first of us to go to the toilet block susses out the showers, etc then comes back and tells the other all about it!

lol I am usually more impressed with the many many ways to flush a toilet in Europe. I usually try to figure it out before I use it!! Very creative these Europeans lol

I guess there are a great many types. We have come across some that are the same as others but we've also seen a lot of different ones.

Our Army Barracks in the older sections have these kind of showers - my first time showering by chain yanking was 2004 on a hockey tour with the NW development team at our SA Games - it was an experience

@JudyEv the tricky part is to soap down first then try yank the chain but dont try do it with the cake of soap in your hands - that can turn into a disaster

There seems to be much more awareness of 'saving the environment' now. Everywhere has recycling depots, etc, so it's a good thing they're trying to save water too.
