Genetic Testing

United States
July 20, 2017 3:36pm CST
Today I met with my new gynecologist, and now I have a treatment plan in place for my endometriosis. I also got sent over to the lab and had a blood test to check for the genetic mutation that predisposes women to ovarian and breast cancer. I will know the results within 2 to 3 weeks. I have to say I am a bit nervous about finding out whether I have the mutated gene or not. If the test comes back positive, a complete hysterectomy and surgical menopause will be in my future. So, fingers crossed that it comes back negative.

Yes a bit nervous understood, but it is for the absolute best result for your Stacey..if you have it the mutated gene, they can all that stuff out of there before anything like cancer would develop and you can avoid the very thing my Mom had ..ovarian cancer.

@TiarasOceanView I'm sorry, it's scary when you're at high risk for dangerous diseases.

Thank you. I am going to try not to think about it for now but I already came to terms with having this surgery a few months ago, so if it's needed, hopefully I won't be a complete emotional mess about it. The surgery itself scares me, as well as the side effects from surgical menopause at an early age.

I had a complete hysterectomy when I was 40 because of ovarian cancer scare and I was filled with fibroid cysts . I was lucky that time it had not turned into cancer but left alone in a matter of months it would have, I had already beat uterus cancer 10 years earlier. with only surgery. I went on estra/methest for hormones and I am just fine with the menopause., been taking it for 12 years.

Thank goodness you didn't have ovarian cancer and were able to beat the uterus cancer. Apparently I have severe endometriosis with all kinds of issues going on inside, but it doesn't cause me constant pain like it does for some people. My biggest worry is tubal pregnancy (since my tubes are blocked but I'm not sure if they're completely blocked) and the chocolate cysts on my ovaries rupturing or becoming abscessed, which I read is a possibility. Although if this test comes back positive I will have them take everything out.
