Roller skating was one of my favourite activities back in the 1950s. I didn't have fancy skates with boots, just the open sort with clips at the edges that you fastened onto your shoes and a strap to make them more secure. The roller skating park shown above was a quite a long way from my home, but at weekends I was allowed to ride there on my bike with a friend, as long as I was home by 5 p.m. Isn't it amazing how much safer life was for a child in those days. Parents would never allow their children to bike a couple of miles to a park unsupervised these days. But, we really were safe there and spent hours skating or exploring the rest of the park. I love this particular old postcard from those days, as the pram is exactly like the one my sister and I were pushed in as babies. This skating rink still exists, though is used as much by skateboards as roller skates these days Did you roller skate as a child?

Yes, I did. I roller skated around the block. When we moved to Pocatello I quit. Not sure why.

@celticeagle yes, kids certainly do what the others are doing, whatever the trend is.

Yes, we skated at an indoor rink. I was 16 the last time I skated.

Pity, I never learnt that. I don't remember a child with roller skates in post-war GDR (German Democratic Republic).

My childhood was filled with fresh air and fun outdoor activities that didn't cost too much

@valmnz So was mine. All children used to play in the street. It was safe, there was no traffic. There were no private cars then.

I thought that pram was a doll's pram! No I never roller skated - I wanted to badly but my parents said I fell over enough already! It's true that in old photos I've usually got a plaster on my knee.

Actually, when I look at the size of the pram you may be right. Falling over was character building in those days, wasn't it!

Oh, yes, I did. In the 1950s! You and I had the same type of skates. I think I still have my skate key used for tightening purposes. We skated on the sidewalks all over the neighborhood. What fun we had!!!!

Yes, it was fin. The footpaths in our street were a bit potholes so I looked forward to weekends at the park. I'd forgotten about the key.

I didn't roller skated as a kid but later on as an adult I did try it. Was not very good at it.

I imagine it's one of those skills best mastered when you're young, when you don't mind falling over

I wouldn't dream of putting on a pair of roller skates now, though I guess it would come back to me if I stayed upright long enough.

Roller skating was one of my favorite things to do. It's a shame children today don't have the freedom we did.

I had the same roller skates, with no boots. just the open skates with the clips. We had no roller skating park, but the apartment of my father was right in front of the biggest park of Milan and my mother accompanied with my younger brother and I at the park to play. He had a small bicycle, I had my roller skates.
