Smiley faces make our day

Many myLotters use the emoticons (is that the right name?) on their posts. We’ve also seen smiley faces from time to time when coming into French villages. The sign tells you what speed you’re travelling at. If you are going too fast, the face is very unhappy with you but as soon as you slow down enough, suddenly there is a beaming face. It’s amazing how a smile can change your day! We always feel quite smug when we're given a big smile. We find these signs very useful although not all have smiles and/or frowns. We don’t have them in Australia. Are they found in your area?

I never seen a sign like that one before here in America. Oh, sorry, America is not very well liked anymore. LOL. But yes, a smiley face can make one feel good for the day.

@JudyEv I guess it helps people. But here I doubt it will make people do the right thing.

Those signs don't exsist here. People wouldn't listen to them anyways as they dont listen to speed limit signs

thats cute but very glad they are not here in SA - most drivers are so busy looking elsewhere they have forgotten the road rules - Keep your eyes on the road!

@JudyEv we drive the same as you do in Australia - on the left side of the road - So we had the same kind of weirdness when we arrived in Europe

Because we are continually in 'foreign' country we both watch the road here. I look for signs, one-way streets, etc just as much as Vince does as it can be confusing, especially when we're on the 'wrong' side of the road. In SA, do you drive on the right or left hand side of the road?

@Inlemay I nearly got hit by a car crossing the road because I was watching the wrong way.

A cool idea. Do they have signs for 'very slow' drivers? presumably a sign?

@YrNemo Certainly going too slowly can be upsetting for other drivers too. We stay off the motorways as our motor-home isn't very fast.

It seems it's only the 'fast' drivers that they're worried about!

@JudyEv Ah... That is interesting (and on the internet, we read about aging drivers who drive sloooooooowly down the roads ).

We were pretty intrigued with them. I guess because we're not used to them they do make an impression on us.

We only get a number . . . I think it flashes if we're going too fast - but that's about it. Oh this made my kids smile and laugh . . . makes our speeding signs quite boring in comparison!

@JudyEv It'd probably make me laugh to see that frown (as you showed in another comment) . . . too funny to see such a sign on the road!

This gave a number then a face so as you slowed up the frown changed to a smile.

We don't have like this in my city. But I think it is also a good idea to use smiley on signage on the street.

The speed would flash up then the face then the speed again etc. If the face was sad but you then slowed down the face became happy.

Yes, we have those signs, but Swiss are very precise, so there is not a smiley or angry face, but you see exactly your speed, so you know how much you have to slow down.

@JudyEv I see, we see all the time the speed, at least you are speeding too much you know how much you are going to be fined.

The ones with the faces would show the speed first then either a happy or sad face according to the speed you were going.

@JudyEv Kind of. When you are somewhere where a short audio track can be listened to, this short clip from that book, The Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, particularly the bit about pressing the button, may help explain it better than I...

Yes, they are found in some billboards around my hometown. They look great and make our day. And yes, you're right. They are called emoticons or emojis. A smile can change everything, I believe!
