Ever put aluminum foil over your windows to keep the heat out?

In Dallas, in the summer, the daytime high temperature can reach above 100. I have thought about placing aluminum foil over the frond storm door glass pane at least at the top half, to see if the reflective surface of the foil might block some of the direct heat that comes from the afternoon sun as it sets in the West after 6 PM. The temperature is worse at that point because of the accumulative nature of heat over the course of a day. If this works I may try getting something more attractive or even purchase a mini-blind and spray paint it with silver or aluminum chrome paint so that it will allow me to close it during the hot afternoon and open it at night to see out.
