A MOTHER's GRIEF

They lived next door to me in my old neighborhood - a woman and her 12-year-old son. I would see him leaving for school in the morning looking very smart in his khakis. He was a friend of my son - so after leaving that neighborhood I kept in touch with his mother and shared her pride when he graduated with honors from a local university then went overseas to further his studies. Sad to say, I received news over the weekend that he had died of a drug overdose. He was her only son , with a bright future ahead of him. How do we protect our children from the scourge of drugs? Is it even possible to do so ? I suppose all any parent could do is warn their kids from an early age about the many pitfalls out there - especially when they attend colleges and universities.

Oh goodness, that is so sad. It's heartbreaking. A parent's worse nightmare. It's a hard world we live in. I feel so sorry for this neighbour of yours. I can't even begin to imagine losing a child.

@dodo19 Some children tend to ignore what parents taught them and instead follow their peers.

From what I noticed she did all the right things like a mother should when he was growing up - I feel her pain.

Oh I am so sorry to hear this Kandase. RIP the son. There really is no way to protect them once they get out in the world. We can warn them of the dangers, but once they are gone away from us, then... It is a worry.

Too many toss life out the door with their behavior. Always sad @Kandae11 and not too much people can do to stop this behavior.

When some young people get into a clique, they quickly forget what their parents taught them and opt to do whatever their friends are doing. very sad.

What parents should do, when possible, is to monitor who their children frequent. Bad companies are most of the time the responsible.

@Kandae11 This is many times the problem, the children go away to go to school and parents cannot even know who their friends are.

That is the problem too. Unfortunately he was at university thousands of miles away at the time. We did hear that he had a lot of friends.

I'm sorry for your friend's loss, I cannot imagine how she feels to have lost him. There's a feeling, but no real words to describe it when as a parent we bury one of our children. But to bury a child as the result of an overdose, that I cannot fathom. Sadly, having lost a child, I can relate to the loss itself, and her life will never ever be the same and people will forever look at her differently.
