I have been to Venice but never for a moment did it strike me to find out how these buildings that stand on water survive. I spent some time on the Net this morning and got some information on this. They I understand stand on wood pilings. And they have been there since the first millennium AD Venice consists of 117 islands connected by bridges and travel is mostly by water buses. There are great sights there, including the St. Mark's Square.
This article shares how Venice Italy was built on a foundation of wood. Why did the Venetians build atop a lagoon? Why did they use wood? Find the answers.

As soon as we arrived at Venice we had take a water bus to reach our hotel. It was quite an experience. What sightseeing did you do there?

@allknowing Just the usual, such as the glass making and a walk around St Mark's Square. We also took a gondola ride, which was quite expensive but important.

@Asylum We did not take the gondola ride as I was not quite happy seeing that water.

I've never been to Venice and the article you posted is interesting. Who would have thought that the foundations were wood?
