Step On a Crack...Break Your Own Back

United States
July 27, 2017 9:33am CST
When I took the dogs out this morning I noticed that two of the steps on my deck are cracked. One step is worse than the other. It's weird that two of the steps have bad cracks since they hardly get any use. I go in and out that way with the dogs but many times I just stand on the deck and they go down into the grass to sniff and do their business. I also noticed that one step feels quite unstable and I'm afraid now to go up and down just in case it cracks and I fall. I mentioned it to my son in law and he said he could get the necessary wood and replace the steps for me without any problem. So for now, only the dogs will be using the steps until they get fixed. It's nice that my son in law will do this and the only cost will probably be a few beers and a sandwich. Certainly can't beat the price! Lucky me that I didn't break my neck, leg or back.

You are wise enough to realize how dangerous those steps could be, and lucky that they will be repaired soon.

@Marilynda1225 It could be the type of wood, but what do I know?

I don't even want to think what could have happened if someone stepped on it and it broke

Wood rots over time, whether you walk on it or not. Even pressure treated.

I hope the dogs are light enough that they don't fall through either. I don't have steps, well I do but the problem I have is that we've yet to stain or paint our small deck and ramp and now some of the wood on top is loosening and I'll trip on some of what's sticking up once in a while. I've yet to fall on it, but I have to watch myself. I had hoped we could afford to stain it this summer, but it looks like it will have to wait until next year when I'll begin getting my social security checks and use some of that to do the work. It's nice when we have friends or family that can help us out without it costing us much money.

Not having a huge expense is great when my son in law has offered to do the job. My deck really needs a power washing and restaining too but it will have to wait until next spring when I have a little more money. Make sure you don't fall on your deck!

Yes it is a good thing you didn't and noticed it so you can get it fixed. I agree, reasonable price.

It's wonderful that my son in law is willing to do it for free otherwise it could have been costly to hire someone
