What is Pot luck.How did we get this name

Good afternoon.All the years being married..Never knew what they mean pot luck.Oh Yes,I know every bring a meal to share. So why is call pot luck?so you bring a pot to share and luck is what other are sharing wether it is good or bad. So your taking a chance if the pot is good or bad. __Below is what I found on google.__________________________________________________ used in reference to a situation in which one must take a chance that whatever is available will prove to be good or acceptable. "he could take potluck in a town not noted for its hotels" NORTH AMERICAN a meal or party to which each of the guests contributes a dish. "a potluck supper"

Yes some used to get together and bring a dish, pot luck meant to me if it was gonna be good or not cause some people cannot cook!

Some women at our church brought the exact same dish, for every pot luck! Thus, they became noted for their wonderful cheesecake or the extra creamy recipe for potato salad they always make! lol

There is a very similar sentence in Spanish for that. You invite someone without much notice and add "a la suerte de la olla" which would translate that the guest would not have something cooked specially for the occasion but would have to accept whatever the person was going to cook for that day.

Pot luck always meant a casserole or dish that is easily transported. I've been to many pot luck dinners and have never been disappointed

Pot luck also means, ten people might bring a dessert to pass or five of them bring macaroni salad. Another words, whatever may come, is what we get to choose from!
