Some Facts About August

Today is Swiss National Day and it's a holiday here. Most people is already vacationing, the next 15 days will be particularly quiet and peaceful. Talking about August, the flowers of the month are the gladiolus and poppy. The birthstones are also two: The Peridot, a green stone, that is believed to instill power and the Spinel, a bright red stone, that is said to protect the owner from harm and sadness. In the USA August is the month that has the highest birth rate; in the UK it is September. In Sweden August is the month for eating crayfish. Our Ikea store will host the delicious annual Crayfish Buffet. Today is hot and we have a warning for a heat wave that should last until Sunday. Is it hot, cool or average in your area? The photo is last year "Ikea Crayfish Buffet.

The reason that September has the highest birth rate in England is that we always celebrate at Christmas.

This is a logical explanation, you always celebrate Christmas and Americans always celebrate Thanksgiving.

Enjoy all that you do today on your national holiday! I've never tried crayfish, but I don't know if I'd like it or not, I'm not a huge fish or seafood lover.

@Juliaacv They are good, Ikea serves them simply boiled in a spicy bouillon, it's the same way they are served in Louisiana.

It's still rainy season here. The month of August in this country is known as the month of suffering and poverty. Don't know exactly what the history is but I think it has something to do with agriculture. It's the lean month with very little harvest.

In many countries August is a month of little harvesting and I can understand that back in times it was a hard month for farmers. We had more rain than usual in July, so this year water is surely not a problem.

@LadyDuck they are small crayfish. here, when we have shrimps for the viand, we can eat the whole seafood complete with the scales, or the outer cover of the shrimps, as long as it is soft.

Ikea in Italy does not host the crayfish buffet, may be the owner decided to host this Swedish celebration in Switzerland because he lived here. I go every year, it's a very good buffet and we go with friends, it's a funny evening.

August: the eighth (8th) month of the year. One time It had 30 days. After, the Emperor Augustus (hence, its name "August") added one day, subtracting by February. July and August, in fact are the only adjacent months by the year with 31 days. For me, a month that I hope will pass quickly. Too hot, temperature-record! I'm almost forced to go to the beach every day, even unwillingly! In the evening, always I have my shower with lukewarm water, and after, rinse in the cold. This because I want to take away the heat from my body, accumulated during the day.

Thank you for the story of the month of August. We are under a heat wave, I showered three times yesterday to try to cool down. Tomorrow I am going to spend some time in the mall, where there is the air conditioning. I hope that August will finish quickly.

@LadyDuck Yes, this year, that's terrible! In Firenze today is foreseen a temperature about 50 ° C! Here a Genova, however, it is not much better. My dear friend Angelo would gift to me an air conditioner, but I did not want it! It is noisy, absorbs energy and then, when the heat ceases, it becomes cumbersome and unused item.

@alberello75 Oh goodness 50º C is the temperature of a warm oven. I do not want an air conditioner, how many days a year I would use it? May be 10, or maximum 15.

@LadyDuck yeah prying open something so small, requiring tenacity and skill is too much for me also, which is why I gave up on those small tea neck clams, same problem: opening them little suckers ! What is the salmon smoked with hickory or mesquite ?

3 Aug 17
@enlightenedpsych2 To open the clams is not a problem, place them in a pan, heat a couple of minutes and they all open. I cannot understand your question, the salmon can be hot or cold smoked, if you use hickory wood is "hickory smoked", if you use mesquite is "mesquite smoked", but here in Europe those two woods are not used, salmon is smoked using cherry, walnut or apple wood. The best is the Scottish smoked salmon.
