My daughter suck her thumb and pull out her hair

My daughter has developed an habit of sucking her thumb and pulling out her hair. At one point I thought it was fungus but was really thinking hard of where she got from. It was funny to me though because I didn't see any other signs of fungus other than her hair going bald. I just didn't think that someone would really sit down and tear their hair bit by bit. I took her to my daughter’s school one day have no idea of how to comb her hair since half of it is missing, so I just put an head band around her head. It drew the attention of a lady though who have apparently went through the same phase with a niece of hers. She said to me what hand does she use I told her left hand, she like oh my God. And I was like what is it? She said she suck finger too does she? I said yes… Of course I thought that was apparent but... She said to me that's not fungus and I am like I am treating her hair for fungus. This is sad though because I thought I knew everything that is going on with my little baby. Day after day I started observing her and has the finger goes in the next hand goes up for the hair and all along I didn't see this. I am not going to beat myself up too much though. Wow… this is a habit that I need to break If you guys have any idea of how to break this habit your feedback is really appreciated. Hair style wise, do you think I should shave her and keep the top of it? What would you do if you were in the situation? I would send a pic but don’t want her hate me in the future

@Wowtalk Yes not sure how to tell you to do that..I am so sorry this is happening. Maybe a toy to give her if she stops? Some cute toys.

@TiarasOceanView I will definitely try the reward system to see if that works, Hope she grows it out

She appear quite comfortable when she is doing it. The possibility still lies because when person is anxious they do all sort of things. I will definitely have to find away to distract her from the habit.

I think it is better to give her a pacifier.

I am going give her and see how it works. My other children always spit it out, she might be the exception

Those seem to me like symptoms of anxiety. I´d take her to a pediatrician.

How old is she? Depending on her age, you can probably reason with her or do some kind of reward system where, if she can refrain from sucking her fingers or pulling her hair, she'll earn some kind of prize. Also, I've never heard of sucking fingers as a "fungus" problem. Here in the U.S. sucking on fingers is considered self-soothing and can develop into a habit...not a result of fungus.

She is 2 yrs old. I could try that and see how it goes. I was referring to her head appearing to have fungus.

@Wowtalk Whoops. Guess I was a little confused. As to the head fungus...coconut oil is known for killing fungus. Perhaps you could rub some on her head every day and see if it helps?

This is called Trichotillomania. It is more likely to happen to people with OCD. Here is a link for you: How old is your daughter?
