Have you ever been stopped by the police?

The day at the office started with a rant by the Canadian bloke who claimed that he was stopped by some Japanese policemen who just wanted to practice their English. I wanted to laugh but he was sweating bullets and I realized the horror he must have been into- surrounded by a group of intimidating-looking policemen asking for his identification card, grilling the wits out of him, then releasing him after ten long minutes. He was relieved and pissed off at the same time. Especially when he was only suspected of the serious infraction of ‘a foreigner walking on a sidewalk minding his own business.’ I wanted to laugh but I didn’t. He would have killed me. lol Photo by Google.

It's a very long time I was stopped by a police officer while I was walking and minding my business... he wanted to invite me out. I could not believe this.

About 7 years ago we had a friend come over to play board games. It got late (1 am or so) and I offered to drive her home. We got about half-way to her place when I was pulled over. As soon as the officer came over, I realized what was wrong: my headlights were off. And why were my headlights off? Because hubby had been working on the car, had disconnected them, and forgot to put that particular "thing" back together. The officer understood and suggested I turn around and just go back home. So I'm driving home and telling our friend she can sleep on the couch and how sorry I am when...I get pulled over again. I was literally right across the street from our house. Sooooo close to making it home! We go through the whole spiel again...I tell him about the other officer and he radios to confirm my story...and then he lets us go. I rarely ever get pulled over (and I've never been ticketed)...but when I do, it's twice in one night!!

@sol_cee What's funny is that our friend was also a redhead. I joked that we must've looked mighty suspicious!

These days in this province, there are a lot of checkpoints everywhere. So I always have to stop but no interrogation at all, no questions asked, all you have to do is open your windows and they'll just take a look at it and say thank you.

Oh...this happened to me late one night. A policeman stopped my car and said I looked lost. Actually I was going a bit slow and I think that was when my clutch was starting to go so it took me a moment or two to gey back up to speed exiting the roundabout.

@sol_cee Iraqi soldiers were thought of to be rapists and robbers, so when we evacuated, the soldiers were already full of stolen goods and raped many women of different nationalities. when we went out, we were dressed like males, and i hardly combed my hair. we were 'dugyut' and did not even don perfume.

I was questioned last week by the traffic police for not wearing the seat belt. In fact I had just taken it off because I had to pick up my phone which had fallen down and we had stopped at a traffic light. When I explained to him, he understood because he sees me almost daily..

I guess, anyone stopped by a police would become nervous. One would immediately ask himself "What bad thing have I done?".

Lucky he was only the lab rat for a few short minutes then I had only been stopped by police in car a few times. And other encounters with them. I had never feared them as such.

Yes I have. We know here that policemen need to write so many tickets a month, though every one of them will deny it. Yet, I was the victim of a quota ticket. It was frustrating and cost me $10. It could have been more, but I didn't do anything seriously wrong.

@sol_cee They don't call it quota ticket, they give you a song and dance reason why they are ticketing you. In my case, I made a left hand turn into the far lane, just like 90% of the people here do, so he turned on his lights, about gave me a heart attack doing so, and asked me why he stopped me. I had no idea, since I was going the speed limit, my seat belt was buckled, which I think he was surprised about, since I put the shoulder part under my arm instead of having my airway cut off by it. He gave me a warning about the turn, but then ticketed me because I didn't have my insurance card on me. The one I had was expired. So, yeah, a quota ticket.

Interesting story. I was stopped by a policeman once. I was walking out of a bookstore and those things by the door beeped so the police officer went up to me. I knew I didn't steal anything and that the beeping was from something I bought in another store, yet when he came to me I became hot and very nervous.

My friend was stopped by the police a couple of times and she got by her usual ‘No Japanese. English please’ retort. This phrase seems to catch police off guard.
