The Left Banke was described as baroque pop which is a term I was unfamiliar with in association with rock. Baroque refers to a European artistic period that began in the 1600s. The connection is personified in “Walk Away Renee” with string section, flute solo and harpsichord. The Left Banke was formed in 1965 in New York and had hits with “Walk Away Renee” (Billboard #5) and “Pretty Ballerina” (#15). The album was titled “Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina” and the song written by Michael Brown, Bob Calilli and Tony Sansone. Keyboardist Brown said the song was inspired by his infatuation with bassist Tom Finn’s girlfriend Renee. Sansone disputed this but Brown claimed “Pretty Ballerina” was also Renee. Lead singer is Steve Martin Caro. The band was strife with infighting and turnover. Brown formed a new Left Banke that included future actor Michael McKean (“This is Spinal Tap”). That did not work out and Brown rejoined the original Left Banke which broke up in 1969. There were reunions until Brown’s 2015 death. “Walk Away Renee” was covered by the Four Tops and Linda Ronstadt and Ann Savoy for their “Adieu False Heart” album.
The Left Banke is best remembered for their hit single "Walk Away Renee", written by the group's then 16-year-old keyboard player Michael Brown (real name Mi...

I remember Linda Ronstadt saying the song was so great because you may not know any words except "just walk away, Renee," and you'll still hum it all day. She is so correct.

The funny thing is when I was growing up, there was a popular Japanese 2 gal singing duo "Pink Lady". One of my aunt's cassette tape of them included "Walk Away Renee" which I thought was THEIR song. I had no idea for years that it was a cover for The Left Banke's song. I couldn't find a YouTube link of it.

I always loved that song. It was one of the best of the 1960's if you ask me.

Oh, I used to love this song. Haven't heard it in ages. Thanks for sharing. Now I know who the band was. Back in high school my French teacher was determined to change all our names to French. So with Marys it was easy they were Maries and Peters Pierres and so on. Well when she got to me of course Rasma stunned her. So she quickly decided I would be Renee.
