Motorcycles on the road: Look and think twice!

There are often groups of people on their motorcycles traveling together. The bikers we have met along the way were always courteous and cautious, but we still have some concerns. In certain areas of the USA, those on a motorcycle are not required to wear helmets or wear protective clothing. Having owned a motorcycle myself, you would not catch me on one without a helmet and protective gear. When in a car accident, things are bad enough. But, with a motorcycle, there is nothing between you and the road but your skin if you are not wearing a helmet and some quality protective gear. Some use the heat as the reason they are not wearing boots or a sturdy jacket while on their motorcycle. That pavement is hot too, and the heat will not show you any mercy if you hit the ground. If you own a motorcycle, use caution not just when looking out for the other guy, but when gearing up for your ride too!

I don't like seeing motorcycles on the road. They weave in and out between cars and I'm so afraid of hitting one.

@jstory07 I certainly wouldn't want to hit one and sometimes they get to close.

I think anyone riding the tail of the dragon needs more than protective gear, they need to have their heads examined.

You are very right about being protected when riding a motorcycle. I used to ride myself and didn't wear a helmet or anything. That was until I seen a horrible accident that left a man in bad shape. He had no protection. That changed my mind.

@PatZAnthony It sure can be, I live on a pretty busy street and there are a lot of motorcycles that goes by. About one in every ten may have protection on.

My dad is 83, and he still uses motorcycle. GROAN. I tell him to use car. But he does not listen. :( He says it is easy to weave through the traffic with motorcycle ..cars end up waiting for long hours. Cannot deny that. But still, I would feel better if he traveled in car. We recently bought a new car - small one as that is the only one I can afford right now. Hope things change from here.

That would be frightening to deal with, but at 83 your father has many years experience and you know how people will often think that makes them safe @vandana

You make total sense. Too often I see motorcyclists with no helmet and only a tshirt and jeans but at least they have boots on, still, it's not enough to protect them if some bozo is reckless and causes him to crash.

Many of the bikers in the local New Mexico area are Vietnam vets and they're really big on freedom @PatZAnthony I do understand their mind set but safety should be the first priority

In the Metro Manila area, riders are required to wear helmets but not necessarily protective clothing. There are lots of motorcycle-related accidents here.

In the uk and spain wearing helmets is compulsory .... but as a motorcyclist I'm guilty of not wearing a jacket... as it is ssooo hot...but I do understand the consequences of not wearing one... I have seen the results of skin verses tarmac....and it's not good...

Never had a motorcycle and never would. Here in Canada the laws are tight, and helmet is important, don't know about clothes but the bikers I see on the highway are well covered.

This subject came up yesterday while on set for that commercial. One man said he was going to sell his motorcycle since it was too hot to dress to ride and it was either that or dress to slide. I mentioned that Anne's brother in law was killed driving his Harley just last month too.

We have so many motorcycle incident over here because they were not protecting protective gear. Not even cops follow their own rules.
