Why is it that when you decide to wake up early, sleep eludes you?

Now yesterday I decided to wake up early and with my alarm in place I hit the bed. And then kept tossing and turning in my bed till 3 am. Is it insomnia or pure anxiety?

I would say it's pure anxiety. It happens to me sometimes, too. It's frustrating and more tiring than if you slept normally but only for a few hours.

Sometimes just a 4 hour sleep is refreshing and sometimes even 10 hours makes you feel way too tired.

But being anxious at the thought of waking up early sounds too weird.

I get the same thing, I have one day a week that I have to teach on-line starting very early and that is the night before that I never get to sleep and if I do sleep I keep waking up three or four times to look at the clock to make sure that I didn't oversleep the lesson. . .

Same here. That one instance when I am way ahead of time.

Can be both. Insomnia when you cannot sleep properly, can be pure anxiety too.
