Lefties Get A Bad Wrap

Back a few decades schools made lefties change hands. In mid evil times lefties were thought to be evil. Even words set lefties aside as a minortity. Words with Latin roots such as sinistra meaning left and a more modern one 'sinister'. Most items used everyday are made for right handed people. Such things as knives, scissors and even notebooks. Cars are made for right handed people. More lefties are in accidents than right handed people. They are five times more probable to die in an accident than a right handed person would be. How many left handed people do you have in your life? My daughter is left handed and I remember my mom trying to teach her to be right handed. Now she can use both.

I am the lefty in our family! I know what it's like to live in a right handed world - but I've naturally learned to adapt - so I can do many things using both hands! My dad suspects he was a lefty - he believes they switched him to becoming a righty.

I once heard a story that my Mom made me do things right handed. I will never know the answer to this puzzle. Was I left handed originally? I do shift from left to right as I go through the day. And at times I have trouble due to this.

Back in her day I think they did try to make left handed people use the right instead. Sorry to hear you have trouble.

@celticeagle I'm just not coordinated with my hands. Or my feet, either! Don't ask me to dance, please.

They tended to do that back then. Now I don't think they get much notice.

@arthurchappell ......I think so. I guess they thought of it a lot differently back in the early 1900's. Almost like an affliction or handicap.

@celticeagle yes nowadays being left handed would be at best mildly curious, at least in Western culture

I grew up using both my hands. Right and left. I could write at the same time using both hands. It was funny and it drove my teachers crazy to see me doing this. However, in school they forced me to stop using my left hand to write. I did while at school, but not at home. I still use both hands. I was happy a few years back I broke my right arm and it wasn't so bad because I could use my left hand. My brother is a left handed person and so is my grandson. We just leave them be and let them be lefties.

They must have felt it would be easier for you later on. My daughter was born a leftie but uses her right now mostly. Thanks to her grandmother. I think leaving them be is the best way. Don't make them feel different. That's not good for a child.

@celticeagle It wasn't because they thought it would be better for me. They did a test when I was 8. I was already writing with my lfet and right at the same time and one teacher didn't like this she said it disrupted her class. So they did a test on me and determined that I should use my right hand from the results.

My daughter is left handed. I've heard about the bad wrap lefties got in school. How are cars made for right handed people? I need both hands when I drive. Now I only use my right foot, since I have an automatic, but that about the car is confusing to me. I know about scissors for left handed people, but I also don't understand about knives or notebooks.

Gear shift on the right for the right handed person. Knives are made with the grift in the right handed way and notebooks open for a right handed person.

I have heard that years ago they used to tie the left hand behind the back to force children to write right handed. I have a daughter, a son-in-law, and two grandchildren that are left handed.

I remember hearing that too. Interesting how some have so many in their families and others have none.

I've known a few lefties. I'm not and no one in family is either, but I've had one or two friends who are lefties.

good idea to learn both but very hard. i knew one i can recall , my 3rd husband and he lived to 78 yrs. which looks pretty good at this point to me.lol. he only had one accident driving i can recall. that wasn't too bad either. he managed to avoid a lot of bad things that could have happened. i recall a few times he saved our lives. so being left i guess just means they are left having to try harder and guess that makes them smarter in a lot of ways

Yes, it can be a detriment and a good thing both. Depends on the person too I guess.

I don't think a left handed person should be made to be right handed either.
