Homeless Shelter

Would you object to a homeless shelter being built near you? Not far from us a parcel of land has been selected to build a homeless shelter and people are protesting and petitioning against it. There are no homes near the parcel of land. The nearest homes are behinds a grove of trees, not within sight of where the homeless shelter would be. I hope the shelter will be built. Its shameful that we don't take care of the homeless. Some cities have individual homes for the homeless. Small shelters that provide Space for a family to survive . Most of our homeless are people who have lost jobs and have nowhere to go but to the streets. With a little help they could get back on their feet and take care of their families. Many families are just a couple of pay checks off the street. It can happen to anyone. What is your opinion? Would you protest against a homeless shelter in your area?

As long as it was not immediately in a residential area, I wouldn't mind it.

I would not and as a matter of fact there are several right near me here. And since I had used one a few times in life and it was a great help to me at the time, no reason for me to object.

I would never object if one opened up next door to us. I don't like to see anyone suffer and many children in our county go to school who have no homes. I would like to see them all taken care of.

No, I would not protest, it's a shame that some people do. I would like to see them in a condition to see homeless and rejected, they should change their minds.

@RubyHawk This should not happen in our days. Our society should be organized so that no child should suffer, it is sad.

@LadyDuck My thoughts exactly. We have the assets to take care of our people but politics move in strange ways.

I think so. I read in the paper that several hundred school children in our county are homeless. I can't imagine how a child can do that. It's heartbreaking. Most parents work at low paying jobs but don't earn enough money to feed the family and rent a home.

No I would not mind. In the past I have rented to a few families that were from the Salvation army homeless shelter, they paid their deposit and first month. At the end/edge of the neighborhood there is now a rehab shelter home, A step down I think what its called, no problems whatsoever.

We have one shelter not far from us. I've never heard of any trouble there. But they never have enough beds. They keep clothing for the asking and serve two meals a day. I've donated clothes and my son and his wife helped provide and serve the food on their days off. We really need another larger shelter..

There are many types of homeless people I think, some are so destructive, some are just people down on their lucks. The latter ones are those we should help. How to avoid the former is another problem. (I have heard stories from neighbors who live close to the destructive type. These are not hesitant in destroying the neighborhood in any way they could.)

@YrNemo I haven't heard of anything like that happening here. But most people and businesses don't want the homeless near them.

@RubyHawk Those so call homeless people go around torching down houses, breaking glass windows, putting home made bomb in people's letter box, etc. They love vandalize houses. (That type of homeless people is the bad type.)

I would never protest a homeless shelter, I think we have a responsibility to the homeless especially since it is becoming a severe problem in this economy. The government should be helping too, they help developmentally disabled people why not homeless.

@RubyHawk You are right about the politicians. I will never understand why they think politicians can make the laws for us when they have not idea whatsoever as to how we have to live.

You said it better than I did. So do I think our lawmakers should pass laws that help our needy We are said to be one of the richest countries and yet we have families living on the street. But our politicians only care about filling their own pockets. They have the best of everything and it's all they care about.

I wouldn't be against it. If it can give shelter to people who wouldn't have it otherwise, I wouldn't mind.

I hate to think of people out in the cold and heat and nowhere to lay down. I see people in the library who have nowhere to go trying to be invisible. It's sad that we can't do better.

I would not protest at all. It is better for them to be off the streets and comfortable then to be living under bridges trying to survie. We don't know what a persons circumstances are and they deserve a place to live until they get on their feet. I am all for it.

It makes me so angry when people get all up in arms about having services for the least of our brothers in their neighborhood. Everyone would swear they want to help but not in their neighborhood, rather hypocritical that!!

That's what I think. We have food to eat and a roof over our head. How must it feel to have no shelter or security. I'm hoping this shelter will be built. It will help so many. I see homeless people and I would like large churches that can afford it do more.

A homeless shelter here would be odd because of the zoning we have in place. We'd have no objection and do have several in other areas. Some groups here have been able to do wonderful work with the homeless. People forget that bad things can happen to every person and we never know which of us will be next and leave us homeless.

That's one of the problems. Zoning in some areas must be changed. But the place I'm speaking of has no homes, there are restaurants, gas stations and other small business but no homes. The closest homes are behind a large grove of trees and can't be seen from the site.It was a surprise to me that anyone would protest.

This country is in desperate need for shelter for so many people. Shameful. Years ago an agency wanted to build a place for mentally challenged folks to live- a group home- and oh the petitions to not allow that. Horrible.
