The lamentation of a nurse. She is currently employed in a private health institution here in my city, had her duty for 12 hours (7PM to 7AM) and she had 3 co-staff nurses to care for 4 general wards. She was called by the father of a child with dengue fever, and since she was the one there, she went to the client (the child) and fixed her IV (intravenous) fluid. It is really a toxic time even at night when almost all clients need nurses, and she did her job unconditionally even though she is underpaid, tired and exhausted, and hungry. But the father was not contented with the nursing management done; he shouted at her while she was endorsing the patients to the incoming shift. She, my colleague, reasoned out, but the father was shouting HOW INCOMPETENT the nurse was. The father also demanded that the supervisor be called. The poor nurse cried a bucket in the linen room after her endorsement. My former students now colleagues, sympathized and empathized with her. It is so sad because some significant others do not acknowledge the hard work we nurses do. Although there may be some who do their jobs because of money, generally, we have the inclination to help, assist, and care for the sick and the ill. And we have the heart to serve.

@ridingbet they are also concerned about their students, the way nurses are with patients.

@hereandthere true. teachers are already the second parents of the students in school.

although we know he is the father of the patient, he should have acknowledged the work the nurse did. the nurse is not assigned to the ward where the child was confined.

I am so sorry to hear this. Truly, I could not be a nurse. A nurse needs to have courage and patience and deep care for people. I am sure the father was worried, just sorry he lashed out at the nurse. I just want to take a moment to say thank you to all nurses, you have not chosen an easy vocation my friend. I hope you have a good week further.

i agree that maybe it was an outburst of emotions, but the child was in stable condition. the father did not think that the nurse who answered his call was assigned in another ward.

@bluesa i don't understand when these people will accept our limitations as health care providers. we are human, and we are not robots and machines. we have feelings and emotions.

Maybe that father was a rich man and he thought he had the power to treat the nurse like that. I am so sorry for your workmate.

@thelme55 some news though, show the goodness and kind hearts of the rich. there is a news feed on FB about a rich Qatari who can speak fluent Pilipino because his nanny is a Filipina, and the man loves his nanny.

that is what i believe too. he thought he has the power to shout at the poor young nurse, without considering the workload of the health care provider.

@ridingbet that happens many times not only to a nurse. Rich people just think they are more powerful than poor. Well, in some sense they are but they don't have to be mean.

In my point of view, I understand the feeling of your colleague but I also understand the father of the child not because of what he did but having so much in his mind..maybe he is thinking that the nurse do not want to assist him instead introducing another nurse. Sometimes, people reacts in a bad way without thinking of others feelings.. because they also have a lot to worry about..pay bills etc...

@ridingbet ..What I meant is not only hospital bills but others such as house rent, electric bills etc...staying in the hospital can make your mind crazy that sometimes you react in a bad way without thinking about others..I just remembered the days when we stayed in the hospital when my father was in the ICU ..we can not eat properly even sleep..and because of that sometimes when something goes wrong with my father we are so sensitive..That is all what I am trying to point out..

@m_audrey6788 well, if the significant other has other things in his mind when he is guarding his sick relative, it is advisable that he leaves for home and let another one to stay with the patient. the kid was stable and there were no bleeding tendencies. maybe the father was vulnerable, but in my opinion, he should have directed his anger to other things and not to the nurse. he may be projecting his emotions to the nurse and that, i believe, is not acceptable.

the hospital is a private hospital run by sisters, so it is expected that all hospital bills are shouldered by the relatives of the client. the nurse is not the one in charge of the ward where the kid was, and she went there to check on the kid because the other nurse was not around.

Some patients indeed can be so inconsiderate and arrogant that they would shout at the nurse. Can't they just lovingly tell the nurse what their concerns are instead? Not only are they underpaid and hungry but they are humans who hurt and cries when shouted at.

absolutely correct, my friend. even the kindest and most considerate nurse can have her boiling point when a significant other is so proud to not accept the reason of the nurse. if patients have their rights, professionals also have.

Well, this is happening all over the world including America. Look, Trump is trying to MAGA - Make America Great Again . . but the far-left, the MSM like CNN, NYT, WAPO, the demoncrats politicians, and some Republican senators-villains like senile McCain and Atcheng Graham are never satisfied of what President Donnie is doing good and achieved. In fact, they hate him so much that they love to see him crucified and castrated!

since the hospital is a private institution, almost all relatives of patients expect a superior care from nurses. the father may be rich, but that does not give him the right to call the poor nurse as incompetent. he should have considered the number of nurses-on-duty working for 12 hours, rather than thinking about his evaluation on the management of the nurse.

Though the pressure on the father might have caused it but it is not the valid reason for him to curse the serving nurse. Its really a hard situation but this happen to us, in our own fields.
