A Beautiful Place , So Worth The Climb !

Last Sunday, we went up the Mt. Samat Memorial Shrine at Pilar, Bataan here in the Philippines. We left the 3 senior sisters with their nieces because they might not be able to climb the many stairs to go up the shrine. We went to its museum, looked at the canyons and machine guns used during the war and the pictures of the Filipinos and American soldiers who did the death march being captives of the Japanese soldiers during their attempt to colonize the Philippines. We also went up the mountain to get a closer look of the very high cross. Sadly, its elevator that can take us to its top is under repair. But just being on top of the mountain is worth the climb. I thought I cannot do it, but I did! My muscles at the back of my lower legs ached for two days after that. Lol Have you gone up a mountain and climbed many stairs? Did you feel pain in your body after that?

Oh yes, for sure they climbed the mountain since it is where the very tall cross with elevator to reach its top is. Maybe that time, the elevator was still functional.

@velvet53 Just a bit. My back hit the trunk, but I was able to get up and my friends helped me walk up again. After that, I never tried. So, this one is nicer to climb.

Thank you. Actually, I can't remember when was it when me and my friends went up the mountain and I slipped while climbing and rolled down. Good thing, I was caught by the base of a tree.

No, I don't know. Actually , there were two sets of stairs. The first one was going to that one with many concrete steps going to the museum. The next one was going further the mountain where the very tall cross that you see in the picture, is. Yes, it's beautiful. It was foggy at first, we cannot see the cross.

@LadyDuck And I think that's one way of keeping you healthy - having to take the stairs everyday. Imagine a house at 3 levels!

@SIMPLYD I like to walk and I have lived all my life in places with steep roads and many stairs and steps to climb. The fact to have the house on 3 levels helps.

At least, you have been climbing mountains before. You must have been so busy already that this activity cannot be done anymore.

@SIMPLYD There is a place called Chimney Rock. Not exactly a mountain. But I have climb up trails there. But it was raining and I fell down an embankment. I had to get stitches in my head. I want to go back there someday.

@SIMPLYD It may be a sad occasion to visit Bataan but as you have described it was thrilling to climb and you enjoyed a lot doing that. Good to hear that after climbing that you were on top of the world.

The pictures are so beautiful and it say the climbing was worth enough. Yes, doing the unusual activities we get some aches like that and I am suffering this way at present. Day before yesterday Independence celebration and Janmashtami celebrations, I was on the run on many things as we organized programmes for children, so I climbed the stairs of my house, which is on second floor, many times to get things. So my legs are paining much still and I know I will recover only after 3-4 days.

Thank you. It was really worth the pain of climbing. So, you too have experienced being in pain because of going up and down the stairs. The stairs are a great way actually of exercising. Maybe if we get to climb up and down the stairs for about 10 times, we will get so slim.

I heard of Mt. Samat in history books of elementary students. I find it hard to breathe when I climb mountains and I feel so tired but it's fun going down after wards

Yes, me too, I have just heard of them from our teacher in elementary. Now, I have seen it for real. You are so young to feel that way, climbing mountains. But for those like me, it's understandable.

It's actually my first time. Maybe you should put it on your bucket list of places to visit in the Philippines. I actually came to know that there is an elevator inside the cross when we already planned to go there and a nephew told us that. We were excited for that. Sadly, that was a long time ago already, since now it's under repair and maybe will not be repaired anymore. It's windy, yet hot when the sun came out. Initially, it was gloomy when we went up there. But once there, the sun came out. There are food stalls and souvenir shops at the top also. We bought shirts.

if i am still the healthy woman several decades ago, i should have climbed a mountain. the last time i climbed a mountain was in the cave in a nearby town. now that i know i have a heart ailment, even a small hill where my school is, is already difficult for me to climb on.

If your muscles are unaccustomed to the strain it will happen - pain for at least two days after. I experienced it.

Did climb a mountain in Malaysia, Malacca, a historical site where the St Peter Church, The hill and more are there. Long climbing and I had sore legs, backaches and headaches after that
