Back from the grocery store and amazed at what I saw

While I was waiting for my stuff to be rung up I had the opportunity to watch a mother with 2 young sons unload her cart. It was nothing but crap. Chips, pretzels, processed boxed meals, frozen waffles, Spaghettios, hot dogs, soda, ice cream, you name it and she had it. I didn't know so many versions of Pringles even existed. I did not see one single speck of vegetable or fruit hit the conveyor belt. I just couldn't believe it. How could a mother in this day and age feed her children all of that garbage? How could she not even try to ameliorate the situation by at least giving them some vegetables and fruit as well? It was all I could do to not roll my eyes. I feel badly for those poor kids that they don't know what good food tastes like.

You don't know for sure that she only buys crap. I'm sure I get the same sort of judgmental stares at some of the stores I go to, because I shop there specifically for the "junky" foods that they sell cheaper than other stores do. My fridge is full of fresh fruits and vegetables, but I buy most of our produce on sale at Sprouts. So yeah, I check out with a cart of chips and soda and other garbage at Walmart... those are occasional snacks, not the majority of our diet. While I could buy produce there, I've never been happy with the quality at the stores around here. They have to have a super deal on something that I'm planning to cook that day for me to add it to my cart. On the other hand, I rarely have anything but fresh produce in my cart at Sprouts. It balances out, but it sure doesn't look like it at the register.

That is true. She may buy her produce somewhere else. But she sure does feed her children a lot of processed garbage.

I'd roll my eyes at her for sure! When it was snack time in my primary grades, I'd see healthy snacks from the educated parents and junk form the uneducated ones. Sigh....

I'm pretty sure if that was here in the Philippines and people had that may different things in their cart, they might have a small store where they live (we call them a sari-sari store) so it wouldn't be a surprise if you see someone here buying 2 or 3 pieces of different things. So I think it would depend on what the person was buying the food for. I wouldn't buy my daughter those things. A few of her snacks for school but I'd prefer making her something a bit healthier. When she does get home from school, I make sure I cook her something that's not processed.

I dont know her situation so i wouldnt judge from that. My hubby and I we use foodstamps. We used to get quantity over quality which meant we weren't buying the best foods. We decided to change that and use our foodstamps to buy healthy foods, when we did that we had significantly less food than we used to get for the same price. It could be that lady doesn't care about nutrition and just buys whatevrr her kids are willing to eat but maybe it is just that she did what we do and bought for quantity rather than quality. I really do wish that they wouldn't make junk so cheap and healthy foods so expensive. It isn't fair and I think it does play a big factor in people's health now a days.

That is how most people eat this day and time! People are lazy, cooking would take their eyes off their cell phones. I was raised on cooking from scratch. Dry beans, peeling potatoes, washing fresh greens and boiling those. Ask a kid what all that is and they will never know.

My mother wasn't a great cook but she never fed us processed crap. I cook from scratch and, not only is it healthier and tastier, but it is CHEAPER too!
