Painted Rocks

While leaving my local starbucks, I noticed these painted rocks at the bottom of the mail box stand. After I took a picture I saw that one of them said to post about it on facebook and to re-hide. Since I dont do facebook, I posted about my find on Instagram.
I'm not familiar with this deal about painted rocks and the concept of these things. So far, it just seems like something that some people are doing just for fun to see if people will post about the rocks and where they end up traveling to. The only other one I can think of that is similar in concept was the "Wheres George?" in which you went to the web site to look up the numbers of the dollar bill and wrote information as to how you aquired it and where you used (passed along) the dollar.
Does anyone know if there's another reason as to the painted rocks concept? Or am I right in assuming that it's just a fun thing that people are doing?

I think it is just a fun thing to do. I know it is a big thing around here. It seems everybody is doing it here. There are many different facebook.com groups from various places.

It could be a hobby or maybe a project the kids at your local school had. I know my daughter has a lot of these fun things to do and I'm pretty sure she'd love painting rocks if given the chance.

Could be used as some type of memorial I imagine. Probably for fun though like you said.
