Thor is coughing.

My dog Thor is coughing and I think he started coughing when I gave him a small bone to chew. The bone was hard, but when I took it from his plate, I noticed the bone had some fragments, so I think he swallowed some, and now, he is coughing. He has no phlegm anyway, but if he is a human then I may say he has hacking non-productive cough. My son, my brother, my sister, and I have thought of some remedies so Thor’s cough will be controlled: --My brother said we should give Thor a big ball of rice and swallow it whole so whatever that causes him to cough will be dislodged off his esophagus, like what we do when a fish bone is stuck in our throat. --My son, on the other hand, said, we must feed Thor with a large bulk of banana, and he should swallow it whole. --I thought just now, that I should apply Vicks VapoRub in Thor’s throat, so his cough and colds will go. --My sister suggested that after I apply Vicks, I should tie his throat with a handkerchief, and let Thor chew a piece of ginger. We had a hearty laugh after that suggestion of my sister. The suggestions are just right and good for a person who has nagging cough. But seriously, I hope Thor will be well. What do you do when your pet has cough?

If a fragment of bone is caught in the throat, it can cause bleeding. It can also cause the throat to swell shut and kill the dog @ridingbet . This is nothing to joke around about. Take him to the vet and have them do an xray.

@ridingbet Humans do not chew bones....you wouldn't give your babies a bone to chew on.....

@AbbyGreenhill of course i know that. what i mean is, since i am a nurse and i take care of human beings, the treatment for humans is different from animals. and of course i DO NOT GIVE bones to humans. it is self-explanatory, Ma'am.

Do not give dogs any kind of bones. They are dangerous. I suggest you take the dog to the vet.

it is Sunday today, and all vet clinics are closed. my sister texted her vet friend, and he advised a cough syrup to be given to Thor.

Your sister's suggestion sounds quite violent. Your brother's suggestion sounds like the most reasonable. I hope Thor gets better soon, most of the times dogs have a strong immune system, so hopefully you won't need a vet.

hahaha! all the suggestions are meant for a person who has cough. that is how we usually deal with it, the Vicks VapoRub and tying the neck with a handkerchief, and for the bone, swallowing a big piece of rice or banana. i hope Thor will be well today.

You should never give bones to your dogs and before doing anything you should try to find out if there is a fragment of bone in his trachea or esophagus. It is possible he swallowed a large piece that has irritated the throat, he should be alright in a few hours.

yes, we know bones should not be given to the dogs because it can hurt the lining of the esophagus or trachea. it was really my mistake to give him a small piece because i thought the bone cannot be broken into fragments. i guess i underestimated the teeth of Thor to break the bone. the whole night, Thor coughed and spit out saliva. i hope the fragment is already dislodged and taken out either by vomiting or through pooping.

@ridingbet If he still cough today, bring him to the vet, a fragment can cause internal bleeding.

@ridingbet aw, I hope he does not have an damage from eating the bone.. I hardly give my dogs bones.. especially cooked ones for fear of them splintering.. I do sometimes give them a whole chicken leg though. but you need to make sure any bones are uncooked.

I would strongly recommend Pheumex, Every time my dog gets sick, I always give this to him. Most specially if he has no appetite. You can buy that in any pet store.

If my dog were to cough it would be a great concern as it would be her heart disease, so very bad news for me to have a cough. I hope he is alright , if not go to the vet.

I'd be worried that he has a bone sliver in his throat. I'd be at the vet within 2 minutes.

he spit out saliva this morning, and since he was coughing continuously all night, he is sleepy now. i really hope the bone fragment is not gone.
